Kalighat TMC Bank Accounts will remain frozen after the Supreme Court declined to intervene in the plea filed by the Mamata Banerjee-led faction seeking permission to operate four accounts maintained with a public-sector bank.

The Kalighat TMC Bank Accounts case relates to four accounts reportedly holding around ₹804 crore. The Supreme Court’s decision leaves the existing restrictions in place and means the faction will not be able to directly operate these accounts at this stage.

Supreme Court Upholds Existing Position on Kalighat TMC Accounts

The Mamata Banerjee-led faction had approached the Supreme Court after the Calcutta High Court declined to grant interim relief over the four frozen accounts. During the proceedings, the faction argued that access to its funds was necessary for meeting the party’s organisational and political expenses.
The State opposed the plea, referring to an ongoing investigation and transactions under scrutiny. The Supreme Court, after hearing the arguments, declined to interfere with the High Court’s position.
The four accounts had been frozen by investigating authorities in connection with a cybercrime-related investigation. The TMC faction has maintained that there was no evidence of illegal transactions and had sought the restoration of access to the accounts.
The latest Supreme Court order does not, by itself, constitute a final finding on the allegations concerning the transactions. The underlying investigation and related legal proceedings remain separate from the question of whether the accounts can presently be operated.
The development is significant for Kalighat TMC because the party faction had sought access to the funds ahead of political and organisational activities. A separate judicial arrangement concerning other TMC accounts allows specified expenses to be met under supervision.
The dispute also forms part of a wider legal and organisational contest involving rival claims over the Trinamool Congress. Questions concerning the party’s organisational control and election symbol are being considered separately by the competent authorities.
For now, however, the four accounts remain frozen, leaving the existing restrictions undisturbed.
