Independence Day is not only a moment to remember India’s freedom struggle but also an occasion to reflect on the responsibilities that come with freedom, said Shamim Ahmed, Editor of Qalam Times and a long-standing human rights advocate, in a message marking the nation’s Independence Day.
Ahmed said that the real strength of a democratic country is measured by the dignity, security, equality and freedom enjoyed by its citizens. He stressed that the spirit of independence must reach every section of society, particularly people and communities whose voices are often overlooked or marginalised.
According to Ahmed, Independence must be understood as an ongoing commitment to justice rather than simply a historic event. The freedom achieved in 1947 carries a continuing responsibility to safeguard constitutional values, protect fundamental rights and create an environment in which citizens can express their views without fear.
Human Rights, Urdu and the Spirit of a Diverse India
Throughout his public life, Ahmed has remained associated with campaigns concerning human rights, social justice and the protection of vulnerable communities. Through the Human Rights Protection Association (HRPA), he has sought to draw public attention to issues of discrimination, inequality and violations of human dignity.
He has also played an active role in efforts to promote and protect the Urdu language. For Ahmed, Urdu is not merely a medium of communication but an important part of India’s literary and cultural heritage. He has consistently advocated greater opportunities for Urdu education and the preservation of the language within India’s multilingual and multicultural framework.
On Independence Day, Ahmed emphasised that linguistic and cultural diversity should be viewed as a source of national strength. Protecting different languages, traditions and cultural expressions, he said, is consistent with the pluralistic character of India.
He further stressed that the principles of equality and justice cannot remain confined to speeches and official ceremonies. They must be reflected in everyday life through equal opportunities, respect for individual dignity and protection against discrimination.
Ahmed’s social concerns have also extended to issues affecting the economically disadvantaged. His initiatives and public campaigns have repeatedly highlighted the importance of addressing hunger, poverty and the basic needs of vulnerable sections of society. His approach to social activism has focused on the belief that human dignity cannot be separated from access to essential necessities and opportunities.
As Editor of Qalam Times, Ahmed has continued to use journalism as a platform for raising questions concerning society, human rights, culture and public accountability. On the occasion of Independence Day, Ahmed appealed to citizens to preserve the values of fraternity, mutual respect and peaceful coexistence. He said that differences of language, religion, culture or social background should never become reasons for discrimination or exclusion.
He also underlined the importance of collective responsibility. According to him, protecting democratic values is not the responsibility of governments or institutions alone. Citizens, civil society organisations, educators, journalists and community leaders must also contribute to creating a society where rights are respected and injustice is challenged.
The Independence Day message comes at a time when questions of social equality, cultural identity and human rights continue to occupy an important place in public discourse. Ahmed said that the country’s democratic future depends upon its ability to ensure that development and progress benefit all sections of society.
He called upon the younger generation to understand freedom not simply as a historical achievement but as a responsibility to protect the rights and dignity of others.
