Satisfaction defines Sreelekha Mitra’s response after sharing the stage with Agnimitra Paul at an animal-welfare meeting in Kolkata, amid political criticism.

Satisfaction became the centre of a fresh controversy surrounding actress and animal-rights activist Sreelekha Mitra after she appeared alongside West Bengal Urban Development and Municipal Affairs Minister Agnimitra Paul at a government-backed discussion on the welfare of stray dogs.
The satisfaction expressed by Sreelekha was not, according to her explanation, related to political association. Rather, she said it came from the possibility of securing a more humane and dignified future for street animals. Her appearance with Agnimitra Paul nevertheless triggered a debate over her political position, particularly because the actress has long been associated with left-leaning views and has been an outspoken critic of the Trinamool Congress.
A Cross-Political Meeting Sparks Debate
The meeting was organised on Monday with the participation of animal lovers and activists to discuss measures concerning stray dogs and other street animals. Sreelekha attended the programme as an animal lover and activist and was seen sharing the stage with Agnimitra Paul.
Following the event, Sreelekha spoke positively about the initiative and indicated that further steps could soon be announced for the welfare of animals living on the streets of West Bengal.
In a social media post, she said that the smiles seen at the event could be an indication that “something good” was on its way. She also referred to the West Bengal Animal Rights Activists Front and expressed hope that collective efforts could help create a safer, more humane and respectful future for the state’s street animals.
The photographs of Sreelekha with Agnimitra quickly drew attention online. Some users questioned whether her participation represented a change in her political outlook, while others speculated that she could eventually be seen among those who have changed political affiliations. Sreelekha responded to such speculation directly.
Addressing those who believed that she had abandoned her ideological position, she said she had “sympathy” for people who reached that conclusion. She also responded to those who imagined that her name might one day appear on a list of political defectors.
Her response included the pointed line, “Thoughts are tax free.”She made it clear, however, that she did not intend to provide such critics with the “satisfaction” they were expecting.
According to Sreelekha, her political or personal position is ultimately determined by her own conscience rather than by the approval of any political party, group or individual.
Her latest appearance has therefore opened another discussion around the distinction between political ideology and issue-based public engagement. For Sreelekha, the meeting appears to have been centred on animal welfare rather than partisan politics.
The actress has previously spoken openly about her political beliefs and has also alleged that her ideological position affected her professional opportunities in the entertainment industry. Her appearance with a BJP leader has now once again placed her political identity under public scrutiny.
However, Sreelekha’s own response suggests that she does not regard cooperation on an issue such as animal welfare as equivalent to changing political allegiance.
For her, the immediate objective remains the welfare of street animals and the possibility of securing concrete measures for their protection.
