Kolkata: The Camac Street Case has taken another turn, with Kolkata Police serving a fresh notice on former IPS officer and Debra MLA Humayun Kabir in connection with the August 27 incident at the Camac Street premises associated with Trinamool Congress general secretary Abhishek Banerjee.
The Camac Street Case has already moved beyond the immediate dispute surrounding the premises, with legal proceedings and administrative notices adding to the controversy. Police officials reportedly made repeated attempts to serve the notice at Kabir’s residence. After allegedly returning without serving it on two earlier occasions, a police team arrived at his home early on Sunday morning.
Police summon Kabir for questioning on September 9
According to police officials, Kabir has been asked to appear before the Shakespeare Sarani Police St ation at 12 noon on September 9 for questioning in connection with the case.
Police personnel reportedly remained outside his residence for some time after knocking on the door. Eventually, a staff member came out of the house, and the officers handed over the notice to him. The police team then informed the staff member that Kabir was required to appear at the police station on the specified date and time.
As the officers were preparing to leave, the staff member reportedly told them that Kabir would appear before the police as directed on September 9.
The notice comes amid a wider investigation into the events of August 27, when a confrontation reportedly broke out during an attempt to remove a billboard installed at Abhishek Banerjee’s office on Camac Street.
According to allegations surrounding the incident, tension escalated when police and civic officials reached the premises. A confrontation reportedly took place between police personnel and security guards present at the office. There were also allegations that police officers were obstructed from entering the premises and that some officers were physically assaulted during the confrontation.
Reports further alleged that several police personnel fell on the staircase amid the scuffle. Civic officials involved in the billboard-removal operation were also allegedly prevented from carrying out their duties.
The police investigation has reportedly focused on several individuals in connection with the incident, including Trinamool Congress leaders Derek O’Brien, Baiswanar Chatterjee and Humayun Kabir. Kabir has now been summoned for questioning as investigators seek to establish the circumstances surrounding the confrontation and determine the role, if any, played by those named in the case.
Derek O’Brien has also reportedly been asked to appear before police again in connection with the same case.
Dispute over Camac Street office continues in court
Meanwhile, the controversy over the use of the Camac Street premises has developed into a separate legal and administrative issue. The premises, where a Trinamool Congress office is located on the seventh and eighth floors, had earlier become the subject of a notice from the property owner. According to Trinamool Congress lawyer Ark Kumar Nag, the owner had issued a notice on August 25 asking the party to vacate the seventh and eighth floors within 24 hours. The Kolkata City Civil Court subsequently granted an interim stay on that notice. However, legal experts have pointed out that the court’s interim order does not necessarily resolve all questions concerning the continued use of the premises as a political office. The situation became more complicated after the Fire Department issued its own notice concerning the condition of the premises.
According to the Fire Department, inadequate maintenance has left the concerned portion of the building in a potentially dangerous condition. Officials have reportedly warned that the condition of the premises could pose a serious risk to people inside the building as well as those in its surrounding area.
The authorities have therefore directed that the affected portions be vacated immediately. The premises are not expected to be used until the required safety compliance and certification are obtained.
The developments have placed the Camac Street Case at the centre of both a criminal investigation and an ongoing dispute over the legal and safety status of the property. With Kabir summoned for questioning on September 9 and other individuals also facing police action, further developments are expected in the days ahead.
