Humayun Kabir appeared at Berhampore Police Station on Monday morning in connection with an audio controversy that has triggered a police investigation ahead of the Rejinagar Assembly by-election. The Nawda MLA and Aam Janata Unnayan Party (AJUP) chief reached the police station before the 11 a.m. reporting time specified in the notice served on him.
Speaking to reporters before facing the investigators, Kabir said he was prepared to cooperate with the inquiry but simultaneously voiced strong dissatisfaction with the police action against members of his party. He also expressed apprehension that he could be arrested in connection with the case.
The Humayun Kabir controversy stems from a telephone conversation that recently surfaced on social media. The recording has been presented as evidence in a case involving alleged attempts to create tension between communities. However, the authenticity of the audio has not been independently established. Police registered a case on September 14 and subsequently summoned Kabir for questioning. Reports have said the case includes several provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.
Kabir has denied involvement in any plan to create communal tension and has described the allegations as part of a conspiracy against him. Earlier reports indicated that the police were examining the audio and that investigators could pursue voice-sample verification as part of the inquiry.
Before entering the police station, Kabir also revived allegations concerning an earlier case involving his son-in-law. He claimed that three police officers had previously implicated his relative in a false case and faced criticism from a court. Kabir alleged that the same officers were now involved in summoning him. These allegations are his own and have not been independently established.
The AJUP chief also criticised what he described as a series of arrests involving his party workers in Murshidabad. According to Kabir, police action against party members was being carried out selectively at a politically sensitive time, with the Rejinagar by-election approaching.
The dispute has now reached the Election Commission as well. Kabir has submitted a complaint alleging that senior police officials in the Berhampore police district have lost their neutrality and are attempting to influence the electoral process. He further alleged that officers at different police stations were acting against AJUP leaders and workers through what he described as old and false cases. These claims have been made by Kabir and should be distinguished from established findings of an official inquiry.
The political backdrop is particularly significant because the Rejinagar Assembly by-election is scheduled for October 6. Kabir had resigned from the Rejinagar seat while retaining Nawda, and his son, Ghulam Nabi Azad, is contesting the by-election as the AJUP candidate.
The latest developments have therefore placed the audio investigation, police action against AJUP members and the upcoming by-election in the same political frame. Kabir has said that the arrests are making it difficult for his party to conduct its campaign, while the police investigation into the audio case remains ongoing.
As of Monday, Kabir had appeared before the investigating officers as directed. The next course of action will depend on the findings of the police investigation and any further proceedings connected with the case.
