Egg attack on TMC MP Mahua Moitra in Krishnanagar sparks a fresh political controversy as she alleges BJP workers targeted her and questions the police response.

Egg attack has once again become the centre of a political controversy involving Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra, after she alleged that BJP workers threw eggs at her during a programme in her Krishnanagar constituency. The Trinamool Congress leader claimed that the incident took place in the presence of police personnel and accused the authorities of removing her from the spot instead of controlling the protesters.
Moitra also used the incident to take a pointed swipe at Supreme Court Justice Dipankar Datta, referring to remarks he had made during a hearing in August when the court dismissed her plea seeking virtual appearance before the police.
Egg attack : Moitra alleges BJP workers targeted her
According to Moitra, around seven to ten people, whom she identified as BJP functionaries including a mandal president and panchayat samiti office-bearers, entered the area where she was attending a programme and allegedly began throwing eggs at her.
She said four police personnel were already accompanying her in accordance with directions of the court. When the situation escalated, additional police officers reportedly reached the location. Moitra alleged, however, that instead of restraining the protesters, the police forced her into a vehicle and took her away from the area.
In a video message, the Krishnanagar MP said the incident reflected the prevailing political situation in West Bengal and questioned why she was removed from the spot while the alleged attackers were not dealt with.
Moitra then directly referred to Justice Dipankar Datta, saying sarcastically that she had now faced the “egg barrage” in the manner suggested during the earlier Supreme Court hearing.
Her remarks were a reference to a case she had taken to the Supreme Court in August. Moitra had sought permission to appear before the police through video conference after being directed to appear at a police station in connection with a case. She had cited concerns about facing another alleged attack, referring to an earlier egg-throwing incident in Kaliganj, Nadia.
The Supreme Court dismissed her plea. During the proceedings, Justice Datta had reportedly observed that freedom fighters had faced bullets in the chest, while questioning Moitra’s decision to approach the court over the matter.
Following Wednesday’s alleged incident, Moitra invoked that remark in a sarcastic video message, saying that she had followed the court’s advice and confronted what she described as an “egg barrage”.
In another video, she showed people gathered around her vehicle and alleged that BJP office-bearers were protesting outside while police personnel were present. In her accompanying message, she described herself sarcastically as both a Member of Parliament of independent India and a “freedom fighter”.
Moitra also thanked the Supreme Court judge in an ironic tone for what she described as the constitutional protection available to her.
The allegations made by Moitra concern the conduct of BJP workers and the response of the police at the scene. These claims should be distinguished from independently established facts unless further official findings or statements are made available.
The latest incident is likely to add another layer to the continuing political confrontation between the Trinamool Congress and BJP in Nadia district, where Moitra represents the Krishnanagar Lok Sabha constituency.
