RSS Warning in West Bengal as senior Sangh functionary Ramdutt Chakradhar urges swayamsevaks to remain disciplined and vigilant amid the changing political environment.

RSS Warning to its volunteers in West Bengal took centre stage on Wednesday as senior Sangh functionary Ramdutt Chakradhar urged swayamsevaks not to assume that the organisation’s responsibilities had been fulfilled merely because the BJP had come to power in the state. Addressing a gathering at the newly constructed Keshav Smriti office in New Town, Chakradhar stressed the need for volunteers to remain disciplined, committed and mindful of the organisation’s social responsibilities. The RSS warning came during the preliminary opening programme of the organisation’s new five-storey office in Action Area 2D, New Town. The building, named Keshav Smriti, has been constructed as the RSS’s organisational activities in Bengal have expanded and the existing Keshav Bhavan in north Kolkata has faced space constraints. The new office is scheduled for its formal inauguration on September 26, when RSS Sarkaryavah Dattatreya Hosabale is expected to attend.
Chakradhar: A Favourable Political Environment Means Greater Responsibility for RSS
According to Chakradhar, the change in the political environment should not lead swayamsevaks to believe that the Sangh’s work has reached its destination. Referring to the changed circumstances in West Bengal, he said that a more favourable environment should be viewed as an increase in responsibility rather than as an occasion for complacency.
Chakradhar reportedly recalled the difficult circumstances in which the Sangh had operated in Bengal in earlier years and contrasted them with the present situation. He referred to the participation of Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari at the programme as an indication of how the political environment had changed. He cautioned volunteers against interpreting the BJP’s arrival in government as the completion of the RSS’s wider objectives. In his remarks, he used the analogy that accidents are more likely on a downhill road, suggesting that favourable circumstances can create their own challenges if discipline and vigilance decline.
He also emphasised that the public observes the conduct and commitment of swayamsevaks rather than simply the political party associated with them. According to the message conveyed at the gathering, maintaining the character and discipline of the organisation should therefore remain a priority.
The remarks came against the backdrop of an expansion of the RSS’s organisational activities in West Bengal. Recent reports citing RSS functionaries say the organisation had around 5,000 shakhas in the state before the May Assembly election and is seeking to increase the figure to 10,000 by Mahalaya on October 10. The organisation has also announced outreach programmes, including initiatives aimed at young people.
The new Keshav Smriti building is intended to provide additional space for the Sangh’s activities in Bengal. Reports say the facility will include meeting spaces, residential accommodation and parking, while the existing Keshav Bhavan will continue to function as an important RSS office.
The New Town facility is being developed amid the expansion of RSS activities and increased participation in its programmes. According to reports, the new building is expected to serve as an additional base rather than replace the existing Keshav Bhavan. Chakradhar also called for an acceleration of organisational work in the state. He referred to the RSS’s centenary-related programmes and the increase in its public outreach, arguing that the organisation should use the growing engagement to strengthen its grassroots presence. The RSS has said that its expansion in Bengal is linked to increased public participation and the growth of its organisational and social activities. The organisation has also indicated plans to focus particularly on youth outreach as part of its expansion programme. The formal inauguration of Keshav Smriti is scheduled for September 26, with Dattatreya Hosabale expected to attend.
