HAR GHAR TIRANGA celebrations in Kolkata are set to receive a major student presence, with nearly 10,000 students expected to participate in a special march organised by the West Bengal government on Monday, August 10. The programme, being held ahead of Independence Day, will see students from colleges and schools joining the procession along with Chief Minister Shubhendu Adhikari.
The Har Ghar Tiranga programme is being organised as part of the Independence Day celebrations, with the march scheduled to begin after 1 pm from the Akashvani area and proceed towards the Victoria Memorial. Students are expected to assemble near Akashvani by around 10 am before the procession gets under way.
The programme is being coordinated under the supervision of Bikash Bhavan, while Kolkata University has been given a significant role in mobilising students from affiliated colleges. According to information available from the university, around 76 colleges have initially been included in the programme, with participation expected from institutions in Kolkata, South 24 Parganas, Howrah and Hooghly.
The organisers have reportedly set a target of bringing around 8,000 college students to the event. Students from several colleges affiliated with Barasat State University are also expected to participate. In addition, around 20 schools in Kolkata are likely to send students to the march.
College and School Students Prepare for the Tricolour March
Colleges outside Kolkata are being provided with buses to transport students to the designated assembly point. Each participating college is also expected to nominate a nodal officer who will remain responsible for coordinating the students and maintaining communication with the university authorities throughout the programme.
College authorities in Kolkata have been asked to encourage maximum student participation. For colleges located in neighbouring districts, arrangements have reportedly been made to bring at least 50 students from each institution.
Several colleges have already indicated substantial participation. Asutosh College Principal Manas Kabi said that more than 300 students from the institution’s NSS and NCC units are expected to join the programme, accompanied by members of the teaching staff. New Alipore College Principal Jaydeep Sarangi also said that more than 100 students from his college are likely to participate.
The participating students will reportedly receive the national flag, caps and T-shirts for the programme. An allocation of ₹300 per student has also been made towards food expenses. The initial expenditure is expected to be met by the respective institutions, with the government subsequently reimbursing the expenses.
The programme has also affected the academic schedule of some schools. According to the School Education Department, around 20 schools in Kolkata are expected to participate. The second summative examinations in schools are scheduled to be completed between August 2 and August 12 under the existing academic calendar. Schools that had examinations scheduled for August 10 have reportedly been instructed to reschedule them if necessary.
However, some schools have opted to maintain their examination timetable while sending students who are not appearing for examinations. Jadavpur Vidyapith Headmaster Parthapratim Baidya said that the examination would be held according to the existing schedule, while students of Classes XI and XII who do not have examinations on that day would participate in the march.
The large-scale participation of students is expected to give the Har Ghar Tiranga programme a prominent presence in Kolkata’s Independence Day celebrations, bringing together students from higher education institutions and schools in a public display centred on the national flag.
