RIVALRY Inside Bengal BJP Takes a New Turn
RIVALRY within the West Bengal BJP’s most prominent female faces has once again become a major topic of discussion after the party’s historic rise in the state. For years, three women — Rupa Ganguly, Locket Chatterjee, and Agnimitra Pal — have represented the BJP’s most recognizable female leadership in Bengal.
All three entered politics from completely different professional worlds. Rupa and Locket built their public image through acting, while Agnimitra came from the fashion industry. Yet over the last decade, these three leaders transformed themselves into strong political figures within the BJP.
Now, after Bengal witnessed a dramatic political shift and the BJP formed its first government in the state, many inside the party believe Agnimitra Pal has quietly moved ahead in this long-standing RIVALRY.
Three Women, One Political Battlefield
The comparison between the three leaders is not new inside the BJP. Their journeys have often been discussed together because all three rose through similar political routes.
Rupa Ganguly was among the earliest celebrity faces to join the BJP in Bengal. Locket Chatterjee followed soon after, and Agnimitra Pal entered the party later in 2019. Interestingly, all three eventually became presidents of the BJP Mahila Morcha in West Bengal and emerged as influential women leaders within the organization.
Despite internal competition, each managed to survive the highs and lows of Bengal politics. However, political observers now feel the balance of power has shifted significantly in Agnimitra’s favor.
Locket Still Powerful in Organization, But Agnimitra Gains Political Weight

Locket Chatterjee remains one of the BJP’s strongest organizational figures in Bengal. She has served as the state general secretary not once, but for three consecutive terms — an extremely rare achievement in the party’s state structure.
She first became general secretary during Dilip Ghosh’s tenure as state president. Later, Sukanta Majumdar retained her in the same role, and even under the current leadership of Samik Bhattacharya, Locket continues to hold the crucial post.
In the BJP hierarchy, the position of general secretary is considered second only to the state president. No other woman in Bengal BJP has held the post continuously for three terms, making Locket’s organizational importance undeniable.
Yet, despite this strong position, many party insiders now believe Agnimitra Pal carries greater political influence.
Agnimitra’s Rise Changed the Equation
Agnimitra Pal joined the BJP in 2019 and rapidly climbed the ranks. Within a year, she became the state president of the BJP Mahila Morcha during the Dilip Ghosh era.
Her rise accelerated further after Sukanta Majumdar took over as Bengal BJP president in late 2021. Under the new leadership, Agnimitra was elevated to the post of state general secretary, putting her on the same organizational level as Locket Chatterjee.
However, the real difference emerged through electoral success.
During the 2021 Assembly elections, Locket Chatterjee contested from Chunchura but lost the election despite being a sitting Member of Parliament from Hooghly. Agnimitra, on the other hand, won her debut Assembly contest from Asansol South and entered the Bengal Assembly successfully.
That victory significantly strengthened her political stature within the party.
Cabinet Position Gives Agnimitra a Major Edge
The latest political developments have widened the gap further. With the BJP forming its first government in West Bengal, Agnimitra Pal took oath as a senior cabinet minister in the new administration.
This achievement has added a completely new dimension to her political profile. While Locket still controls considerable influence in organizational matters, Agnimitra now combines both organizational strength and executive power.
Party leaders privately admit that holding a powerful ministerial portfolio has placed Agnimitra in a stronger position than the other two women leaders.
Rupa Ganguly’s Influence Slowly Declines

Among the three, Rupa Ganguly was once considered the most emotionally connected figure for BJP supporters in Bengal. Her celebrity status and sharp speeches made her an important campaign face during the BJP’s expansion years.
However, over time, her direct involvement in organizational politics reduced. Compared to Locket and Agnimitra, Rupa is no longer seen as actively influential in the BJP’s internal power structure.
As a result, the contest today is largely viewed as one between Locket Chatterjee and Agnimitra Pal.
BJP’s New Female Power Equation in Bengal
The emergence of these three leaders reflects the BJP’s changing political culture in West Bengal. The party successfully brought in women from entertainment and professional backgrounds and turned them into political figures with mass appeal.
But politics ultimately rewards visibility, electoral success, and power. At this moment, Agnimitra Pal appears to have combined all three factors more effectively than her counterparts.
Whether this lead becomes permanent or whether the internal dynamics shift again remains uncertain. But for now, in Bengal BJP’s ongoing RIVALRY, Agnimitra Pal seems to be standing slightly ahead.
