Governing Body members of Calcutta Girls’ College were accorded a warm farewell during a special ceremony organized at the college staff room on Saturday, May 16. The programme was presided over by Principal Dr. Satya Upadhyay in honour of the outgoing President of the Governing Body, Mohammad Nadeem-ul-Haque, along with other retiring nominated members following the recent decision of the West Bengal Government to dissolve governing bodies in government-aided educational institutions across the state.
The Governing Body farewell ceremony was attended by several distinguished faculty members and college officials. Among those present were Associate Professor Dr. Nayeem Anees, Associate Professor Dr. Nandini Bhattacharya, Dr. Imtiaz Ahmad, and many other senior teachers of the institution. The outgoing members honoured during the occasion included Indranil Kar, Dr. Dabir Ahmed, Sandipan Saha,  Maitrayee Bhattacharya and Professor Debasish Das. During the programme, speakers recalled the contributions made by the outgoing members toward the academic and administrative development of the college. Principal Dr. Satya Upadhyay appreciated the cooperation extended by the former governing body members over the years and acknowledged their role in maintaining institutional discipline, academic standards, and student welfare.
Faculty members also shared their experiences of working with the outgoing administration and described the occasion as an emotional moment for the institution. Floral tributes and mementos were presented to the retiring members as a gesture of gratitude and respect.

State Government Order Leads to Dissolution

The farewell ceremony was organised following the West Bengal Government’s order issued on May 14, 2026, by the Higher Education Department, terminating the tenure of Presidents and nominated members of Governing Bodies of all state-aided colleges across West Bengal with immediate effect. The notification also cancelled service extensions granted to several officials serving beyond the retirement age.
According to official directives issued by the Higher Education Department, the move was part of a wider restructuring process affecting state-aided educational institutions. The notification stated that the appointments of governing body presidents and nominated members stood cancelled immediately.
Reports further indicated that the government had also discontinued extensions granted to several officials and members serving beyond their tenure.
Calcutta Girls’ College is one of Kolkata’s prominent institutions for women’s higher education. Affiliated with the University of Calcutta, the college has earned recognition for its academic excellence and contribution to women’s empowerment in eastern India. The institution offers undergraduate and postgraduate programmes across humanities, science, and commerce streams and has long played a significant role in promoting higher education among women from diverse social backgrounds.
Over the years, the college has produced notable alumni and maintained a strong reputation in academic and cultural activities within West Bengal’s educational landscape.
