The Women Free Bus Travel Scheme announced by the West Bengal government is set to transform public transportation for women across the state. From June 1, 2026, all women in West Bengal will be able to travel free of cost on every government-operated bus, according to an official announcement made after the recent state cabinet meeting.
The major welfare initiative was confirmed by Women, Child and Social Welfare Minister Agnimitra Paul, who stated that the scheme has been introduced to strengthen women’s empowerment and make daily commuting safer, easier, and financially affordable.
Free Travel for Women Across Urban and Rural Bengal
Under the Women Free Bus Travel Scheme, women from both urban and rural areas will receive the benefit. The free travel facility will be available on short-distance as well as long-distance government buses operating throughout the state.
The state government believes the project will significantly reduce transportation expenses for working women, students, and women from economically weaker families. Officials also expect the scheme to improve access to education, employment, healthcare, and daily services.
Digital Smart Cards with QR Codes to Be Issued
In a fresh notification issued by the Transport Department, authorities confirmed that every eligible woman passenger will receive a special digital smart card embedded with a QR code. The smart card will contain the passenger’s photograph and personal details for identification during travel.
Women interested in obtaining the smart card must submit applications at their local BDO or SDO offices.
Documents Accepted for Smart Card Application
The government has clarified that several identity documents will be accepted during the application process. These include:
- Aadhaar Card
- Voter ID Card
- MGNREGA Job Card
- Ayushman Bharat Health Card
- Driving Licence
- PAN Card
- Passport
- Pension-related documents
- Government employee ID cards
- School, college, or university identity cards
- Any other valid state government identity document
Free Travel Even Before Smart Card Distribution
Officials have stated that the scheme will officially begin before the smart card distribution process is fully completed.
Until passengers receive their digital smart cards, women can travel free by showing any valid photo identity card while boarding government buses. Conductors will verify the documents and issue a “Zero Value Ticket” or thermal paper ticket as proof of travel.
Government Says Scheme Will Benefit Lakhs of Women
According to state officials, the initiative has already received approval from the Finance Department and the state cabinet. The government believes the project will particularly help women living in rural areas and low-income households who depend heavily on public transportation for work, education, and healthcare access.
The official notification clearly states that the scheme will come into force from June 1, 2026.
