KOLKATA: Swarup Biswas Arrested has emerged as one of the most significant developments in West Bengal’s entertainment and political circles after Kolkata Police detained Swarup Biswas, brother of former state minister Arup Biswas. Officers from New Alipore Police Station arrested him following multiple allegations, including extortion, molestation, intimidation, attempted murder, criminal conspiracy, and violations under the Arms Act.
According to police sources, the case originated from a complaint lodged by a woman residing in the Regent Park area of Kolkata. The complainant, who is associated with a makeup artists’ organization connected to the Tollygunge film industry, alleged that she had been deprived of work opportunities for nearly two years. She claimed that when she approached industry representatives seeking employment, she was allegedly asked to pay money and was subjected to threats.
Investigators stated that the Swarup Biswas Arrested case gained momentum after allegations surfaced that another industry worker had allegedly paid ₹45,000 in exchange for work-related assistance. Authorities are now examining claims that several individuals were threatened and coerced into paying substantial sums of money over an extended period. Based on these complaints, police registered cases under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, including charges related to molestation, extortion, attempted murder, and criminal conspiracy. Additional charges have also been filed under the Arms Act.
Swarup Biswas previously served as president of the Federation of Cine Technicians and Workers of Eastern India, a powerful body associated with the Tollygunge film industry. Over the years, sections of technicians and industry workers had repeatedly voiced concerns regarding the functioning of the federation and its leadership. During the tenure of the previous state administration, Biswas was widely regarded as an influential figure within the industry.
However, recent developments have significantly altered the federation’s standing. On Wednesday, BJP MLA Papia Adhikari announced that the federation would no longer function in its existing form within the Tollygunge film sector. She stated that all technicians and workers would now come under the supervision of the Eastern India Motion Pictures Confederation, which operates from New Delhi. According to Adhikari, the restructuring aims to ensure greater transparency and eliminate alleged irregularities within the industry.
The arrest comes shortly after another major development in Swarup Biswas’s personal life. His wife, Jui Biswas, a councillor of Kolkata Municipal Corporation’s Ward 81 and Chairperson of Borough 10, recently announced her decision to seek a legal divorce. Jui revealed that she had been living separately with their two daughters since 2019. While legal proceedings had been delayed for several years, she confirmed that both parties had now initiated formal steps toward divorce after consulting legal advisors.
Swarup Biswas has so far declined to comment publicly on either the criminal allegations against him or the divorce proceedings. When approached by members of the media regarding family matters, he stated that he did not wish to discuss personal issues publicly.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities are expected to question additional individuals connected to the allegations as they continue gathering evidence in the case.
