KOLKATA: FIR Against TMC Leaders Debashis Bandyopadhyay and Paritosh Dutta has intensified a major controversy surrounding Kolkata’s historic Surendranath College after authorities reportedly uncovered cash-filled bags, an alleged firearm and two lavishly furnished rooms hidden inside locked sections of the campus. The discoveries have prompted a police investigation and raised serious questions about the use of college property and student union facilities.

The controversy first came to light on Tuesday when college authorities opened a locked students’ union room during an inspection. According to officials, two trolley bags containing bundles of cash were recovered from the room. A significant portion of the currency notes was reportedly damaged by termites, indicating that the money may have remained there for an extended period.

As the search continued, investigators reportedly made another startling discovery. Police sources claimed that an alleged firearm was recovered from the union room, leading to immediate legal action. Following the recovery, an FIR Against TMC Leaders Debashis Bandyopadhyay and Paritosh Dutta was registered at Muchipara Police Station under provisions of the Arms Act.

According to police sources, investigators are examining how the weapon entered the campus, who had access to the room and whether additional individuals may have been involved. Both leaders are expected to be questioned as part of the ongoing investigation.

The case took an even more dramatic turn when college authorities opened two additional locked rooms located on the ground floor of the institution. What they found resembled luxury accommodation rather than facilities inside an educational institution.

The rooms were reportedly equipped with air-conditioning systems, large beds, wardrobes, modern furniture, decorative false ceilings, premium interiors and attached washrooms. Officials present during the inspection described the rooms as comparable to hotel suites rather than student facilities. Investigators also reportedly found items associated with personal leisure and comfort, adding to the growing controversy.

Sources familiar with the matter alleged that student leaders associated with the Trinamool Congress had unrestricted access to these rooms. Authorities are now attempting to determine who authorized the renovations, how the facilities were financed and for what purposes the rooms were being used.

Police sources indicated that Debashis Bandyopadhyay was associated with the college’s governing body. Allegations have also emerged that Debashis and Paritosh Dutta maintained control over several locked rooms, including the students’ union room, restricting access to other college authorities.

According to officials, the cash-filled trolley bags were discovered around 4:30 p.m. when one of the locked rooms was opened. Later in the evening, at approximately 8:45 p.m., the college principal and staff allegedly noticed the firearm inside the union room, leading to the filing of the police complaint.

FIR

The principal has reportedly informed investigators that requests for keys to the locked rooms were often met with resistance and intimidation. These claims are also expected to be examined during the inquiry.

The discoveries have reignited allegations made by BJP MLA Sajal Ghosh, who has repeatedly accused Trinamool-linked student leaders of financial irregularities connected to admissions and student union operations at Surendranath College. Last week, Ghosh formally wrote to Chief Minister Shuvendu Adhikari seeking a detailed investigation into alleged misuse of student union funds.
Following the recovery of cash and the alleged firearm, Ghosh claimed that the money could be linked to corruption and financial misconduct. He argued that a thorough probe and questioning of those involved would help identify the source of the recovered cash.
Referring to banking records, Ghosh also alleged that approximately ₹1.5 crore had accumulated in a student union cultural fund account. He questioned how such a large amount could have been collected when students typically contribute only nominal fees toward union activities.
Meanwhile, investigators are focusing on three key aspects of the case: the source of the recovered cash, the circumstances surrounding the alleged firearm and the purpose behind the existence of luxury rooms inside the college campus.
As police continue their investigation, the discoveries have sparked widespread debate across West Bengal’s academic and political circles. The findings are expected to have significant legal and political implications in the days ahead.
