Encounter Claims Life of Baruipur Rape-Murder Accused; Family Refuses to Claim Body
The prime accused in the brutal rape and murder of a minor girl in Baruipur, West Bengal, was shot dead in a police encounter late Tuesday night. The deceased, identified as Prabhas Mandal, reportedly tried to flee police custody by snatching a firearm from an officer during a crime scene reconstruction.
The incident took place when a police team took Prabhas back to the crime site in the Suryapur area to reconstruct the sequence of events. According to senior police officials, Prabhas suddenly overpowered an accompanying officer, snatched his service weapon, and fired a round while attempting to escape. In self-defense, the police team retaliated, firing back at the fleeing suspect. Prabhas sustained critical bullet injuries during the encounter and was rushed to the Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead on arrival.
“He Reaped What He Sowed”: Family Shows No Sympathy
In a stark and unusual turn of events, Prabhas’s immediate family has entirely distanced themselves from him, showing zero sympathy over his death. Both his mother, Sandhya Mandal, and his wife, Champa Mandal, stated that he paid the price for his heinous deeds.
- The Mother’s Stance: Upon receiving the news of her son’s death on Wednesday morning, Sandhya Mandal expressed no grief. “He got what he deserved for his actions. It is for the best,” she said bluntly. She further informed the authorities that she refuses to claim his body or even look at his face one last time.
- The Wife’s Confession: Prabhas’s wife, Champa, who had already abandoned her matrimonial home with their child after his arrest, echoed similar sentiments. She stated that she wasn’t surprised by the allegations against him. “I cannot say he didn’t do it. Even after our marriage, I witnessed his perverted behavior and endured endless torture. He committed a grave crime, and he got shot for it. There is nothing left to say,” Champa told reporters from her paternal home.
The Gruesome Crime That Sparked Outrage
The tension in Baruipur has been simmering since last Saturday when a minor girl went missing from the Suryapur area. On Sunday, her lifeless body was recovered from a local pond, packed inside a sack. The autopsy and preliminary investigation confirmed that the child was brutally raped before being murdered.
Following public outrage, the police acted swiftly and arrested Prabhas Mandal on Sunday. Based on his interrogation, three other accomplices—Anand Sardar, Dibakar Sardar, and Kabir Mollah—were subsequently apprehended.
On Wednesday, the police brought both Sandhya and Champa to the Baruipur Sub-Divisional Hospital for the official identification of the body. Authorities have confirmed that a mandatory magisterial inquiry will be conducted into the police firing incident to fulfill legal protocols.
