Amit Shah’s Bengal Offensive: Ram Temple, UCC and Sharp Attack on TMC

Amit Shah intensifies campaign in North Bengal, targeting TMC over corruption, appeasement, and regional neglect while promising sweeping reforms

Union Home Minister Amit Shah mounted a strong political offensive in North Bengal on Wednesday, launching a series of sharp attacks against the ruling Trinamool Congress (TMC) government. Addressing multiple rallies across Jalpaiguri, Alipurduar, and Cooch Behar, he accused the Mamata Banerjee-led administration of long-standing corruption, weak governance, and divisive politics ahead of the upcoming state assembly elections.

During his speeches, Amit Shah alleged that the state has suffered under what he described as 15 years of misrule. He criticised the TMC for what he called “appeasement politics,” claiming that governance decisions have been influenced by vote-bank considerations rather than development priorities. His remarks were clearly aimed at consolidating voter sentiment in the politically crucial northern districts.

In a particularly strong statement, Amit Shah warned against any attempt to recreate a situation similar to the Babri Masjid dispute in West Bengal. Referring to recent political developments involving a newly formed regional outfit, he asserted that such issues would not be allowed to arise in the state. He also rejected allegations emerging from a purported sting operation, describing them as politically motivated attempts to tarnish the BJP’s image.

Highlighting the construction of the Ram Temple in Ayodhya, Amit Shah presented it as a major achievement of the central government. He argued that the long-pending issue was resolved only after strong political will at the national level, linking it to the electoral mandate received in 2019. This, he suggested, reflects the BJP’s commitment to fulfilling longstanding public aspirations.

Focusing on future policy direction, Amit Shah promised that a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) would be implemented if the BJP comes to power in West Bengal. He stated that such a law would ensure equality and address social issues, including controversial topics like “love jihad.” Additionally, he outlined welfare measures such as the implementation of the 7th Pay Commission for state employees, financial assistance of ₹3,000 per month for women, and free bus travel for women across the state.

Raising concerns over regional imbalance, Amit Shah accused the state government of neglecting North Bengal. He claimed that a disproportionate amount of public funds had been allocated in a manner that overlooked the development needs of the region. According to him, this has resulted in economic and infrastructural disparities that need urgent correction.

In a remark that sparked political debate, Amit Shah cautioned TMC workers to remain indoors during the first phase of polling, suggesting consequences after the election results. The statement drew criticism from opposition quarters, adding to the already heated political atmosphere in the state.

Overall, the rallies indicate an aggressive electoral strategy by the BJP, with Amit Shah positioning governance, identity, and development as central themes. His speeches reflect a concerted effort to influence voter perception and strengthen the party’s presence in West Bengal ahead of the polls.
