The Shahzad Poonawalla Resignation saga has taken another turn after the BJP’s national spokesperson again asked the party to accept his decision to step down from both his organisational responsibilities and primary membership. Poonawalla had first offered his resignation on July 30, but the Bharatiya Janata Party reportedly declined to accept it and instead asked him to reconsider his decision.

The Shahzad Poonawalla Resignation comes amid what he has described as a period of deep personal and financial consideration. In a second letter made public on Monday, Poonawalla said that, after reflecting carefully on the matter, he had reached a final decision to leave his role as national spokesperson and withdraw from active primary membership of the BJP.

Poonawalla says the decision followed “deep reflection”

In his latest letter, Poonawalla acknowledged the BJP’s earlier decision not to accept his resignation, describing the party’s response as deeply emotional and expressing gratitude to the leadership for asking him to reconsider.
He said that he was thankful that the party had initially refused to accept his resignation and had given him an opportunity to rethink the decision. However, after what he described as extensive reflection, he concluded that he should once again request to be relieved of his responsibilities.
Poonawalla also expressed gratitude and respect towards Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior BJP leaders, including Union Home Minister Amit Shah, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and BJP organisational leader B. L. Santosh.
His letter indicates that the decision was not presented as a rejection of the party’s senior leadership. Instead, he sought to explain that personal circumstances and his future plans had led him to the conclusion that he should leave active party politics.

Financial and personal circumstances cited

One of the principal reasons cited by Poonawalla is the need to move towards the private sector.
According to his letter, financial and personal circumstances have contributed to his decision. He indicated that he now needs to pursue opportunities outside active political work.

For a full-time national political spokesperson, such a transition represents a significant professional change. The role involves regular public appearances, television debates, political commentary and defending the party’s position on major national issues. Stepping away from that responsibility would therefore mark a substantial change in Poonawalla’s public career.
However, his second letter also contains references to recent developments within the party environment.
Poonawalla referred to “the past few days’ events” and said that certain individuals, whom he had previously discussed with the leadership in detail, had contributed to his decision to stand by his original choice.
He did not publicly identify those individuals in the letter. Consequently, it would be premature to speculate about their identities or the precise nature of the disagreements.
Poonawalla’s political journey has itself been marked by a significant transition.
He left the Congress following a controversy surrounding the party’s 2017 presidential election process. He subsequently joined the BJP and eventually became one of the party’s prominent national spokespersons.
Over the years, Poonawalla became a familiar face in television debates and political discussions, frequently presenting the BJP’s position on issues involving the Congress and other opposition parties.
His public profile also extended beyond formal party responsibilities. He has written about political and economic issues and has frequently expressed support for Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
His departure, if formally accepted, would therefore represent the end of an important chapter in his political career.
Poonawalla first offered to resign from all BJP positions and primary membership on July 30, 2026.
The party did not accept the resignation at that time. Instead, he was reportedly asked to reconsider.
The development became more noticeable when Poonawalla subsequently changed his profile on X, removing references to the BJP from his biography. His current profile describes his identity in terms of religion, culture, nationality and his writing, while continuing to refer to himself as a lifelong follower of Prime Minister Narendra Modi.
The profile change fuelled speculation about his political future, although social-media changes alone cannot establish whether a person has formally left a political party.
The second resignation letter has now made his position clearer: Poonawalla is again asking the BJP leadership to accept his resignation.
The immediate question is whether the BJP will accept the second request.
The party’s response will determine whether Poonawalla formally ceases to be a BJP member and national spokesperson or whether another effort is made to persuade him to remain.
His latest letter is notable because it combines appreciation for the party leadership with a firm request to leave. That makes the situation more complicated than a conventional political resignation triggered by an open public dispute.
At this stage, the most important facts are those Poonawalla himself has put on record: he wants to leave active BJP membership, he intends to explore the private sector, and he has referred to personal and financial circumstances as well as differences involving certain individuals.
The precise details of those differences remain unclear.
Poonawalla’s case highlights the complicated relationship between public political careers and private professional choices. Political spokespersons often become closely identified with their parties, particularly when they spend years defending party positions in public forums.
Yet political careers can also evolve. If the BJP accepts his resignation, Poonawalla would leave the organisation after a period in which he became one of its recognisable national voices. Whether he returns to active politics in the future, enters the private sector permanently or takes up another public role remains to be seen.
For now, his second letter represents a renewed and apparently determined attempt to close his chapter with the BJP.
