KOLKATA: Jayprakash Majumdar Arrested after a dramatic confrontation outside a residential property in Bidhannagar on Wednesday, following allegations that the senior Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader had been unlawfully occupying a flat for more than a decade. Police intervened amid protests at the site and later formally arrested him on charges linked to illegal possession of the property, intimidation, and abusive behavior toward its elderly owner.

According to local sources, Jayprakash Majumdar’s arrest became the focal point of public attention after a group of protesters assembled outside the disputed apartment in Bidhannagar’s AE-337 block, demanding that the property be returned to its rightful owner. The demonstrators accused the TMC leader of continuing to occupy the flat despite the expiry of his rental agreement several years ago.
Police officials reached the location after receiving reports of a disturbance. Witnesses alleged that tensions escalated when Majumdar reportedly engaged in a heated exchange with some protesters and was accused of physically confronting a few individuals present at the gathering. Following the incident, officers detained him and transported him to Bidhannagar North Police Station, where he was subsequently placed under arrest.
The controversy centers around a flat owned by Arati Raychaudhuri, who claims that Majumdar originally rented the property in 2012. The lease agreement reportedly expired in 2015, and according to the owner, no fresh contract was signed thereafter. She alleges that despite repeated requests and legal notices asking him to vacate the premises, Majumdar and his family continued to occupy the apartment without authorization.
Raychaudhuri has further accused the veteran politician of using threatening language and making offensive remarks when she attempted to reclaim possession of her property. These allegations have now become part of the police investigation.
The incident has sparked significant political and public discussion, with questions being raised about the prolonged occupancy dispute and the circumstances surrounding the alleged unauthorized use of the flat. Authorities are expected to examine relevant lease documents, legal notices, and witness statements as part of the ongoing inquiry.
No official statement from Majumdar or his legal representatives had been released at the time of publication. Police have indicated that further legal proceedings will follow based on the findings of their investigation.
