Summer Internship Program at Surendranath College for Women, Kolkata, concluded successfully on Monday, marking the culmination of a fifteen-day academic journey that provided students with valuable exposure to research, literary analysis, and critical writing. Organized by the Department of Urdu, the initiative witnessed enthusiastic participation from fourth-semester students who immersed themselves in intensive reading and scholarly activities from June 1 to June 16.
The Summer Internship Program was conducted in line with the objectives of India’s National Education Policy (NEP 2020), which emphasizes experiential learning and skill-based education. Designed as an integral component of the academic curriculum, the internship aimed to nurture research aptitude, critical awareness, and creative expression among students while encouraging independent learning and intellectual engagement.
The success of the program was largely attributed to the leadership and mentorship of Dr. Nuzhat Zahra, Head of the Department of Urdu, whose guidance remained central throughout the internship. Under her supervision, students were provided with an encouraging academic environment that promoted reading habits, analytical thinking, and scholarly inquiry.

Summer
As part of the Summer Internship Program, each participant was required to undertake an in-depth study of at least one significant literary work and prepare a detailed critical review. Students engaged in various academic exercises, including note-making, textual interpretation, literary evaluation, and critical writing, enabling them to gain practical experience in research methodology and literary criticism.
Participants described the internship as a rewarding and transformative experience. They noted that the structured academic activities not only enhanced their understanding of literature but also strengthened their ability to analyze texts and articulate ideas effectively.
The fifteen-day program, comprising nearly sixty hours of continuous academic engagement, played a vital role in developing students’ intellectual abilities and creative potential. Faculty members observed that the internship encouraged independent thinking and helped students cultivate a deeper appreciation for literary studies.

Strengthening the Future of Urdu Studies

Educationists associated with the initiative believe that such academic programs are essential for fostering a culture of research and scholarship among young learners. The internship also served as an effective platform for connecting students with the rich traditions of Urdu language and literature while preparing them for future academic pursuits.
The Department of Urdu’s initiative reflects the broader vision of NEP 2020 and demonstrates how innovative educational practices can enrich learning experiences beyond conventional classroom teaching.
With the successful completion of the internship, the college hopes to continue organizing similar academic programs in the coming years, enabling students to further develop their research capabilities, literary understanding, and critical thinking skills. The initiative stands as a commendable example of educational excellence and a meaningful contribution to the promotion of Urdu language and literature.
