The Relief Materials Stockpile controversy intensified in West Bengal on Friday after a large quantity of government-issued relief supplies was allegedly discovered inside a warehouse linked to former Pandaveswar MLA Narendra Nath Chakraborty in Andal. The discovery triggered public outrage, prompting the deployment of police and central security forces to prevent the situation from escalating.

Relief Materials

The incident comes amid a series of allegations surfacing across the state following the recent political change in government. Several leaders associated with the Trinamool Congress have been accused of storing relief materials intended for economically disadvantaged families in private residences, club premises, and offices. Authorities have already launched multiple investigations and enforcement actions in connection with such claims.
Tension erupted in Andal’s Bankola area when local residents, accompanied by political activists, gathered outside a warehouse located near the former legislator’s residence. According to eyewitnesses, protesters broke open the facility’s lock and entered the premises, where they reportedly found a substantial Relief Materials Stockpile consisting of sarees, tarpaulins, mosquito nets, school uniforms for children, and other items allegedly meant for public distribution.
Residents alleged that relief supplies sent by government agencies for vulnerable communities had never reached intended beneficiaries. Instead, they claimed, the materials were stored for long periods and allegedly diverted elsewhere for financial gain. News of the discovery spread rapidly throughout the locality, drawing large crowds and sparking widespread anger among villagers.
Among the items recovered were numerous sarees, mosquito nets, emergency tarpaulins, and educational uniforms. Protesters also claimed that packets of condoms were found inside one section of the warehouse. Several residents questioned why such materials had remained stored instead of being distributed to eligible beneficiaries.
One local resident involved in the discovery alleged that supplies earmarked for poor families, including food grains and essential relief items, had been stockpiled and diverted. According to the resident, many people who were entitled to receive assistance never obtained the benefits that were allocated in their names.
After receiving reports of growing unrest, personnel from Andal Police Station arrived at the scene, supported by central security forces. The combined deployment succeeded in bringing the situation under control and preventing further disturbances. Authorities have since launched an investigation into the matter to determine the origin and intended use of the recovered materials.
Opposition leaders have demanded an impartial and transparent inquiry, arguing that all allegations should be thoroughly examined. As of publication, no official response had been issued by former MLA Narendra Nath Chakraborty regarding the accusations. Representatives of the Trinamool Congress have also not publicly commented on the controversy.
In a separate but related development, relief supplies including blankets, tarpaulins, rice, and wheat intended for underprivileged residents were reportedly recovered from a property linked to local Trinamool leader and Panchayat Samiti official Udeep Singh in Jamuria on Thursday night. Local residents have alleged that neither Singh nor members of his family have been seen in the area since the party’s electoral setback. Some residents have called for his immediate arrest pending investigation.
Authorities are expected to continue examining both cases as scrutiny over the handling and distribution of public welfare materials grows across the state.
