KOLKATA: TMC Leader Arrested in a major late-night police operation as former Kolkata Municipal Corporation councillor Tarakeshwar Chakraborty was taken into custody over serious allegations, including extortion and outraging the modesty of a woman. The arrest took place around 12:30 a.m. on Saturday following the registration of two criminal cases against the senior Trinamool Congress leader at Survey Park Police Station.
The TMC Leader Arrested case has drawn significant attention because Chakraborty is a prominent political figure who previously represented Ward No. 104 of the Kolkata Municipal Corporation and also served as Chairman of Borough No. 11. He resides on Kalikumar Majumdar Road in the Garfa-Santoshpur area of south Kolkata.
According to police officials, the first FIR accuses Chakraborty of offences related to outraging the modesty of a woman. The complaint also includes allegations of wrongfully obstructing work, causing physical assault, damaging property, using criminal force against a woman with the intention of disrobing her, criminal intimidation, theft, and unlawful trespass. A second FIR registered on the same day contains allegations of extortion.
Police sources stated that both complaints were formally lodged on June 23 at Survey Park Police Station, leading to the registration of two separate FIRs. Investigators arrested the 65-year-old former councillor after conducting a preliminary inquiry into the allegations.
The accused is expected to be produced before a Kolkata court, where investigators are likely to seek police custody to facilitate further questioning. Officials believe custodial interrogation may help establish the sequence of events and examine the allegations in greater detail.

The arrest comes amid an intensified crackdown on former municipal representatives following the political transition in West Bengal after the Assembly elections. Since the change in government, several former councillors have reportedly faced legal action in connection with allegations of extortion, coercion, abuse of authority, and other criminal offences.
Tarakeshwar Chakraborty’s arrest adds another high-profile name to the growing list of former civic representatives facing investigation, reflecting the broader law enforcement drive into complaints relating to alleged misconduct during the previous municipal administration.
