Muslim Minority politics has come sharply into focus as the Trinamool Congress (TMC) carried out a massive reshuffle of candidates in Malda and Murshidabad—two districts where Muslim communities form a significant majority. The party has dropped several sitting MLAs despite strong performances in previous elections, sparking internal debate and political speculation.
In Malda, where TMC had won 8 out of 12 seats in 2021, candidates have been changed in 5 constituencies. Muslim Minority dynamics are even more crucial in Murshidabad, where TMC had secured 20 out of 22 seats. This time, apart from compulsory changes in a few seats, the party has replaced candidates in 8 more constituencies and shifted two MLAs to different seats.
These districts have long been considered TMC’s minority vote banks. However, over the past few years, rising communal polarization and local tensions have made the political landscape more sensitive. The emergence of new political players, including Humayun Kabir’s party, has added another layer of complexity.
Senior leaders believe that the voting behavior of Muslim communities in these regions has evolved. Earlier, minority votes were largely aligned with Congress and Left parties, but a significant shift toward TMC was seen in the 2021 elections. Now, with changing ground realities and increased competition, the party appears to be recalibrating its strategy.
The reshuffle is reportedly based on detailed ground surveys and feedback, aiming to counter anti-incumbency and local dissatisfaction. However, the move has not gone down well with all leaders, as some denied tickets have shown signs of rebellion and may contest independently.
With high stakes in these Muslim-majority districts, the outcome of this strategic overhaul will play a crucial role in determining TMC’s performance in the 2026 Assembly elections.
