TMC takes firm disciplinary action after repeated warnings: Suspension of Humayun Kabir

Suspension—that’s the word that suddenly shifted the political mood on Thursday. Humayun Kabir, the MLA from Bharatpur, was repeatedly cautioned by the Trinamool Congress for making statements that the party considered unacceptable. Even after several reminders, he continued to challenge the official line. Eventually, the party’s disciplinary committee took the strongest step it could: an indefinite suspension.

The moment of his suspension was dramatic in itself. Just before Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee’s rally began at Berhampore Stadium in Murshidabad, Humayun arrived at the venue. Almost at the same time, the announcement came from Kolkata—he was no longer part of the ruling party’s fold. Hearing this, he quietly walked out of the venue.

Addressing the media in Kolkata, senior leader and Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim explained the decision. “This is not the first time he was warned. Not once, but three times he was cautioned. When someone refuses to respect the party’s principles, the disciplinary committee has to act,” he said. Firhad also stressed, “Trinamool is a secular party. Bengal’s thinkers have always taught us to steer clear of communal politics. Anyone who uses religion as a political tool has no place with us.”

When asked whether any administrative action might follow, Firhad replied calmly, “The law will take its own course. Administration will do what administration is meant to do.”

Reacting to his removal, Humayun Kabir said, “On December 22, I will launch a new party and give my response.”
