Chaos During Evening Rush and Stampede
Stampede broke out at Bardhaman Railway Station on Sunday evening, leaving at least seven passengers seriously injured and sparking panic among hundreds of commuters. The incident occurred as travellers rushed to catch trains, creating an overwhelming crowd that ultimately led to the accident.

According to railway passengers and police sources, the stampede began when the Haldibari Express arrived at Platform No. 5 at around 5:30 p.m., while a Howrah Main Line local stood on Platform No. 4. As some travellers hurried down the overbridge to exit, others surged upward to board the Howrah-bound local, causing severe congestion on the stairs.
How the Stampede Happened
Witnesses reported that there was barely any room to move on the overbridge. In the middle of the rush, a woman fell on the staircase. No one stopped to help her; instead, several passengers climbed over her in desperation to move forward. This triggered screams, confusion, and a chain reaction as more people fell, leading to the stampede. Eyewitnesses claim between seven and ten people sustained injuries, though railway officials have so far confirmed only two casualties.
Stampede Survivor’s Account
Arup Roy, who was on the overbridge with his wife on their way to Shaktigarh, recalled that his wife suffered serious injuries while he injured his hand in the chaos. “We were running to catch the local when a wall of people suddenly pushed forward. On the footpath, I saw several people lying injured,” he said, still visibly shaken.
