Partha Chatterjee Granted Bail by Supreme Court

Former West Bengal Education Minister Partha Chatterjee has secured bail from the Supreme Court in the high-profile SSC recruitment scam case. The court granted bail in the CBI’s case concerning the irregularities, though this does not guarantee his immediate release from prison.

Bail Limited to One Case

While Partha Chatterjee has been granted bail in the SSC scam, he remains in custody as he has not been granted bail in the primary school recruitment scam. Earlier, the Enforcement Directorate (ED) had also granted bail to Chatterjee and several other accused in connected money laundering charges.

Cash, Gold Recovery and Agency Criticism

The former minister has been in prison since July 22, 2022, when raids at his residence and that of his associate led to the recovery of several crores in cash and large quantities of gold. Since then, both the CBI and ED have repeatedly faced judicial criticism for their inability to produce conclusive evidence against the accused, which has allowed many to obtain bail on grounds of investigative lapses.

Supreme Court’s Conditions

While granting bail, the Supreme Court imposed strict conditions on Partha Chatterjee:

  • He must surrender his passport.
  • He is required to appear before authorities at regular intervals.
  • He cannot leave the jurisdiction of his residence without prior approval.

The court underlined that any violation of these conditions could lead to his bail being revoked.

For now, despite winning bail in one of the biggest recruitment scandals in Bengal’s political history, Partha Chatterjee remains behind bars until his other pending cases are resolved.
