Muslim Teacher Shot Dead in Bihar: Fears of Targeted Killing Grow

Darbhanga, ( Qalam Times News Network) Muslim Teacher Shot Dead in Bihar In a deeply unsettling incident that has sparked outrage and fear across Bihar’s Muslim community, Mansoor Alam, a 52-year-old Muslim government school teacher, was shot dead early Wednesday morning by two unidentified assailants in Darbhanga district. The killing is being widely perceived as a possible case of targeted violence amid the rising tide of attacks against minorities across India.
Alam, originally from Teesi Parsauni village in Madhubani district, had been posted at Nasirganj Primary School in Singhwada block for over 15 years. A dedicated educator known for his humble nature and punctuality, he was commuting by bicycle from his rented room in Shankarpur village, about two kilometers away from the school, when he was ambushed near Bharwada-Kamtaul road at around 6 a.m.

Fears of Communal Targeting Surface

According to police sources, the two attackers—riding a motorcycle—intercepted Alam and fired two shots: one struck his head, the other his shoulder. He died on the spot, barely 500 meters from his school. The cold-blooded murder has rattled the region and raised pressing questions about the safety of Muslim professionals, especially in rural areas.
Locals, awakened by the sound of gunfire, rushed to the scene and informed the police. Sadar SDPO Jyoti Kumari, accompanied by a forensic team, reached the location promptly and sent the body for post-mortem to Sadar Hospital. “The victim was shot at close range. We have launched a full investigation and are exploring all possible angles,” she stated.
Although the police have not confirmed any communal motive so far, the timing and nature of the attack have intensified fears within the community. Local residents, teachers’ unions, and civil society groups suspect that Alam may have been targeted because of his religious identity.

Outrage Grows Over Teacher’s Killing Amid Rising Islamophobia

“This is not an isolated crime. It must be seen in the backdrop of growing Islamophobia and unchecked violence against Muslims,” said a local activist, adding that Alam had no personal enmities and was widely respected.
The Jamaat-e-Islami Hind, All India Muslim Majlis-e-Mushawarat, and United Teachers’ Forum of Bihar have condemned the killing and demanded an impartial high-level judicial inquiry. “The murder of a schoolteacher on his way to serve society is not just a criminal act—it is an attack on the values of peace and education,” a joint statement read.
Calls for justice and security assurances are growing louder, as Alam’s family prepares for his burial amid immense grief. His three children, two of whom are students, were informed shortly after the incident.

The killing comes at a time when the safety of minorities, particularly Muslims, is under national scrutiny. Human rights observers warn that such incidents—if not swiftly and transparently resolved—could deepen communal mistrust and fear.
As the investigation continues, Alam’s killing stands as a grim reminder of the urgent need to address rising hate crimes and ensure the safety of vulnerable citizens, especially those committed to public service in underserved regions.
