Mob Violence in Bihar’s Madhubani district has sparked outrage after a Muslim woman who reportedly went to a village leader seeking assistance in a dispute later died from injuries following a brutal assault. The victim, identified as Roshan Khatoon, a resident of Amhi village in the Ghoghardiha area, had approached the village head on February 28 hoping to resolve a local issue, according to residents and police officials.
Instead of receiving help, Khatoon was allegedly attacked by a group of people led by the village head’s son, Manu Singh. Witnesses claim that the confrontation quickly escalated and turned into mob violence, leaving the woman severely injured. She was later taken to Patna Medical College and Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries on March 1.
Local residents allege that Khatoon was tied to a pole and repeatedly beaten by the attackers while several people stood nearby. Some witnesses also claimed that during the assault she was verbally abused.
According to reports circulated by a local digital outlet, Khatoon was fasting at the time of the incident. It has been alleged that when she asked for water, she was instead forced to drink alcohol mixed with urine. However, police officials have said these claims are still under verification and cannot be confirmed at this stage.
A resident who witnessed the incident said the woman had gone there hoping to get justice. “She had come with a complaint, expecting someone to listen. Instead, the situation turned violent and she was beaten mercilessly,” the person said.
Roshan Khatoon’s husband has demanded the harshest punishment for those responsible and called for the accused to receive the death penalty.
Ajay Mansuri, the state president of the Mansuri community, said the community would pursue the case until justice is delivered. “We will go to every possible extent to ensure that those responsible are punished. The guilty must face the strictest legal consequences,” he said.
The incident has deeply disturbed local residents, many of whom say the brutality has shaken the entire village.
Following the incident, police registered a First Information Report (FIR) and launched an investigation. Authorities confirmed that the son of the village head has been detained and is currently being questioned.
A police officer involved in the investigation said officials are working to identify all individuals who were present during the assault. “We have detained the mukhiya’s son and questioning is underway. Anyone found responsible will face strict legal action,” the officer stated.
Police teams have also been deployed in the area to prevent any escalation of tension and to maintain law and order.
Authorities said they are carefully examining every claim related to the incident, including reports circulating on social media. Officers are collecting statements from witnesses and local residents to reconstruct the sequence of events.
The death of Roshan Khatoon has triggered anger among residents and social activists, who are demanding a fair and transparent investigation. Community leaders say the tragedy highlights the vulnerability of ordinary citizens who approach local authorities seeking help.
“People go to village leaders hoping their problems will be solved peacefully,” a local elder said. “What happened to Roshan Khatoon has left many families shocked and fearful.”
Police officials have assured that the investigation is ongoing and further arrests may follow once more evidence is gathered.
