Mamata Banerjee to meet Muslim clerics amid Waqf law protests

West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee is set to hold an urgent meeting with clerics, imams, muezzins, and Muslim intellectuals at the Netaji Indoor Stadium on Wednesday amid escalating protests over the amended Waqf legislation.

The move comes as TMC finds itself under pressure, with tensions peaking in parts of the state and violent clashes erupting in Murshidabad’s Suti and Samsherganj.

Firhad Hakim, Kolkata Mayor and senior TMC leader from the Muslim community, has been tasked with organising Wednesday’s meeting. Hakim condemned the violence, calling it “anarchist” behaviour that undermines the community’s cause. “Anarchy never solves any problem… these actions only help the BJP and its saffron cronies,” he said.

Reassuring the Muslim community, Hakim asserted: “As long as Mamata Banerjee is the chief minister, minorities are as safe as the majority in Bengal.” He added that the real battle over the waqf amendment must be fought in the Supreme Court, not on the streets.
