Washington D.C., June 6 — A high-profile Indian parliamentary delegation, led by senior Congress MP Dr. Shashi Tharoor, held an important meeting with U.S. Vice President JD Vance in Washington D.C. on Thursday. The delegation, currently on an international outreach mission, engaged in detailed discussions on counter-terrorism cooperation and the evolving India-U.S. strategic alliance, with particular emphasis on India’s recent counter-terror operation, code-named Operation Sindoor.
The bipartisan team of Indian lawmakers comprised Bhubaneswar Kalita (BJP), Tejasvi Surya (BJP), Milind Deora (Shiv Sena), Sarfraz Ahmad (JMM), and former Indian ambassador to the United States, Taranjit Singh Sandhu. Together, they conveyed India’s perspective on regional security, the increasing threat of cross-border terrorism, and India’s calibrated military response to the April 22 terror strike in Pahalgam’s Baisaran Valley, which resulted in the death of 26 civilians.
During the hour-long deliberation, the Indian delegation offered a comprehensive account of Operation Sindoor, a precision strike executed on May 7 against terror infrastructure in Pakistan-occupied territories. The delegation asserted India’s unwavering resolve to dismantle terror networks and reiterated that sustained inaction by Pakistan on terrorism would be met with proportionate and determined response.
Dr. Tharoor, addressing the symbolic value behind the operation’s name, remarked:
“The choice of the name Operation Sindoor is both powerful and poignant. In Indian culture, sindoor marks the sacredness of marital commitment. These terrorists desecrated that symbol by brutally extinguishing the lives of 26 innocent civilians, many of whom were women. Our response, therefore, carried not only strategic clarity but emotional gravity.”
Vice President JD Vance, who happened to be in India when the Pahalgam tragedy occurred, had earlier condemned the attack in strong terms. “It was a devastating and horrific act. My wife Usha and I were deeply moved by the beauty of India and its people during our visit. We stand with them in this time of mourning,” he said in a statement shortly after the attack.
Following the meeting, Dr. Tharoor posted on social media platform X, formerly Twitter:
“Excellent meeting with Vice President @JDVance today in Washington D.C. Our delegation had a wide-ranging and productive exchange, from counter-terrorism strategies to advanced technological cooperation. A positive step toward deepening the India-U.S. strategic partnership.”
The visit to Washington follows the delegation’s successful diplomatic engagements across Latin America, including stops in Guyana, Panama, Colombia, and Brazil. As part of this ongoing initiative, the team has also briefed the bipartisan U.S.-India Congressional Caucus, led by co-chairs Ro Khanna and Rich McCormick, emphasizing India’s evolving security doctrine and its zero-tolerance stance on terrorism.
India’s assertion through Operation Sindoor has been positioned as a paradigm shift in its counter-terrorism posture — precise, resolute, and symbolically resonant. With global consultations such as this, New Delhi continues to build international consensus around its right to self-defense and the urgency of collective action against terrorism.
