Petrol Sales Alert Issued as Government Warns Against Unsafe Fuel Storage
Petrol Sales Alert has been issued by India’s Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, cautioning petrol pump operators across the country not to sell petrol or diesel in empty or inappropriate containers. The ministry emphasized that fuel is available in sufficient quantities nationwide and urged citizens not to panic or engage in unsafe fuel storage practices.
The advisory comes at a time when global tensions in West Asia have created concerns about fuel supply chains. Iran has reportedly restricted movement through the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world’s most critical oil trade routes, in response to military developments involving the United States and Israel. While a few vessels have been allowed passage, many cargo ships remain stranded in the region, affecting the movement of energy supplies from West Asia.
Government Reassures Public Amid Fuel Supply Concerns
Amid rising public anxiety, the Petrol Sales Alert message from the petroleum ministry reiterated that India currently has adequate reserves of petrol and diesel. Officials stressed that consumers should not rush to fuel stations to store petrol or diesel in bottles or other containers, as such practices are dangerous and violate safety regulations.
Over the past few days, long queues have been reported at petrol pumps in several parts of the country. Many motorists have attempted to purchase extra fuel and store it in bottles or other containers due to fears of a potential shortage. The ministry warned that storing highly flammable substances like petrol or diesel in unsuitable containers poses serious safety risks.
The government has also directed petrol pump owners to strictly follow safety guidelines while dispensing fuel. According to the ministry, selling petrol or diesel in empty bottles or other unsafe containers is not permitted under existing regulations.
Authorities cited a recent incident in Tamil Nadu where a petrol pump sold petrol to a customer in an unsuitable container. The matter became public, prompting the government to take action against the pump owner. Officials made it clear that similar violations in the future will lead to strict penalties.
No Shortage of Petrol or Diesel, Says Government
The Ministry of Petroleum reiterated that India does not face any shortage of crude oil or fuel products at present. However, disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz have affected certain imported supplies, particularly liquefied petroleum gas (LPG).
In response to the situation, the government has intensified efforts to boost domestic production and manage supply chains effectively to prevent any disruption in fuel availability.
LPG Booking Surge Raises Concerns
Alongside petrol and diesel concerns, anxiety has also grown over LPG cylinder availability. Many consumers have reported difficulties in booking LPG cylinders online, leading to crowds gathering outside gas distribution centers.
Officials acknowledged that the number of LPG bookings has surged sharply due to fears triggered by the international situation. Although meeting the sudden spike in demand poses logistical challenges, the government confirmed that there is currently no shortage of LPG in the country.
A senior petroleum ministry official urged citizens to remain calm and book LPG cylinders only when genuinely required.
“Bookings have increased rapidly in the current situation, which naturally puts pressure on supply systems. However, there is no shortage of LPG anywhere in the country,” the official said.
