Congress Flags Fraudulent Voters in Gujarat
The Congress has alleged that nearly 30,000 fraudulent voters are listed in Gujarat’s Navsari Lok Sabha constituency, accusing the ruling establishment of undermining the principle of “one person, one vote.” At a press conference on Saturday, state Congress president Amit Chhabra claimed that voter rolls in Navsari are filled with fake entries and duplicate identities.
Duplicate Names and Multiple IDs
Chhabra said his team’s scrutiny of about 40 percent of the 609,000 registered voters in Navsari revealed shocking discrepancies. According to him, nearly 30,000 names were identified as fraudulent voters. These included cases of the same person registered across multiple polling booths, minor spelling variations used to mask duplications, and even multiple voter IDs issued under the same individual.
BJP Stronghold Under Spotlight
Navsari is a politically sensitive seat, held by state BJP president and Union Minister C. R. Patil. The revelation of alleged fraudulent voters has put the spotlight back on electoral transparency, especially as Congress had earlier flagged similar irregularities in Karnataka’s Bengaluru Central seat.
National Echo of Electoral Concerns
In Karnataka, Congress leader and Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi had already raised alarms over bogus entries in Bengaluru, prompting the Chief Election Commissioner Jagnesh Kumar to hold a press briefing. However, his explanations failed to address concerns about duplicate names and fake addresses. Instead, the poll body issued a veiled warning to Rahul Gandhi, asking for sworn affidavits. Currently, Gandhi is leading his “Right to Vote” campaign in Bihar, making electoral integrity a central issue.
Chhabra’s Final Word
Chhabra stressed that what has been exposed in Navsari’s Choriyasi assembly segment could just be the tip of the iceberg. “If such massive irregularities exist in just one constituency, it raises questions on the credibility of the entire electoral roll,” he warned.
