In a dramatic turn of events in West Bengal’s East Burdwan district, five individuals have been arrested in connection with Thursday’s violent protest against State Library Minister Siddiqullah Chowdhury, during which his vehicle was reportedly attacked and vandalised. According to police sources, the arrested individuals are known locally for their association with the Trinamool Congress (TMC) or as its supporters.
The arrests were made by officers of the Monteswar Police Station, and the accused are set to be presented before the Kalna court on Friday. Police also indicated that the investigation remains active, and further arrests are likely in the coming days.
Protest Turns Hostile During Minister’s Constituency Visit
Minister Siddiqullah Chowdhury, who represents the Monteswar Assembly constituency, faced a hostile reception on Thursday as he arrived in the area to oversee preparations for an upcoming July 21 political event. As his convoy entered the Maldanga and Monteswar Bazaar areas, a group of protestors carrying brooms and black flags blocked the road, shouting slogans such as “Go back!” and accusing the minister of betrayal and extortion.
According to eyewitness accounts, the demonstrators began hurling bricks, rods, and sticks at the minister’s vehicle, damaging it severely. The protestors alleged that Siddiqullah Chowdhury had failed to fulfil his promises of development in the region and had not visited the area in over four years.
Minister Alleges Conspiracy, Criticises Police Inaction
Following the incident, the minister visited the office of the Superintendent of Police (SP) to lodge a formal complaint. Expressing his deep frustration, Siddiqullah accused local police officials of standing by passively while the attack unfolded.
“This wasn’t just a spontaneous protest,” the minister alleged. “It was a pre-planned conspiracy, and those behind it must be held accountable.”
He went on to directly name Ahmad Hussain Sheikh, President of the Monteswar Panchayat Samiti, alleging that the attack was orchestrated by his supporters with his full knowledge and backing.
Stern Warning to Party Leadership
Siddiqullah Chowdhury did not hold back in criticising his own party leadership, warning that if no action is taken against the perpetrators, he would be compelled to take drastic steps.
“I am putting the party on notice,” he declared. “If this political terrorism is not curbed, I will lead a mass rally in Kolkata on July 10. What happened today is no less than a threat to internal democracy.”
Drawing parallels with past political movements during the Left Front era, he said, “If necessary, we will revive the spirit of resistance from that time. I will not remain silent if my dignity and safety are compromised.”
