In the year 2025, the day of Eid-e-Miladunnabi come on 5 September 2025 (Friday).

Prophet Muhammad ﷺ has been called Rahmatul-lil-Alameen i.e. (the prophet of mercy) for the whole world. His birth showed the path of light and justice not only to Arabia but to the whole world. This is the reason why the day of Eid-e-Miladun nabi is not just a day of celebration for Muslims but a day to remember the Prophet’s Seerat (lifestyle), his ideals and his teachings.

This festival holds special importance in India because here it is seen as a symbol of Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb. On this occasion in many cities, processions, Naatiya Mushairas, decoration of mosques and houses, Dua and Darood Sharif mehfils take place. This festival gives the message of brotherhood, love and peace among Muslims.

Eid-e-Miladun nabi: Historical Background

Eid-e-Miladunnabi has its roots deep in Islamic history. It is believed that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ was born in Mecca in 570 AD. This year is called “Amul-Feel” i.e. “Year of Elephants” because in this year a Habshi ruler named Abraha attacked Kaaba with an army of elephants, but Allah foiled that attack.

The date of birth of Prophet ﷺ is said to be the 12th of Rabiul Awwal month of the Islamic calendar. This day is considered a day of blessings and mercy for Muslims all over the world. In the initial period, there was no tradition of celebrating this day on a large scale. But gradually the Muslim society made it a means of keeping the memory of Prophet ﷺ and his teachings alive.

In many Islamic countries, this day is known as “Mawlid-un-Nabi”. This festival is celebrated with great pomp in Egypt, Turkey, Pakistan, India, Bangladesh, Indonesia and many Arab countries. At some places, processions and programs are organized at the government level as well.

This day takes on a special color in India, because the Muslim community here sees it not only with religious devotion but also as an opportunity for social interaction and brotherhood.

Religious significance and spirituality

The greatest significance of Eid-e-Miladunnabi is that it provides an opportunity to remember the life style and teachings of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ. In Islam, Prophet ﷺ is considered to be the last messenger of Allah, whose life is an ideal example for humanity. The basic foundation of his teachings is justice, mercy, brotherhood and worship of Allah.

A Mercy to the Worlds - IMAM-US.org

In the Quran, Allah has said about Prophet ﷺ:

“We have sent you ˹O Prophet˺ only as a mercy for the whole world.” (Surah Al-Anbiya 21:107)

This verse testifies that his birth is a mercy not only for Muslims but for the entire humanity.

On this day, Quran-Khwani, Durood and Salam, Naatiya Mushaira and processions are organized in mosques and homes. Stories related to the life of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) are narrated, which teach children and adults. People pray that the feelings of love, peace and brotherhood be strengthened in their hearts.

This day is not just a day of celebration but also of introspection. The simple life of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh), his love for justice and his kindness towards the poor and the oppressed are lessons for the world even today.

Eid-e-Miladun nabi gives us the message that true celebration is not only in lights and decorations but in following the path shown by Prophet Muhammad (pbuh).

Eid-e-Miladun nabi: Differences in ideologies

There are different ideologies in the Muslim society regarding Eid-e-Miladunnabi. Most Sunni Muslims celebrate it with great enthusiasm and devotion, but some communities like Ahl-e-Hadith and Salafi ideology do not believe in this festival. They argue that Prophet Muhammad ﷺ and his companions (companions) never celebrated this day as a special festival, so it is not right to make it a religious festival.

On the other hand, Muslims who celebrate Eid-e-Miladunnabi believe that this day refreshes the memory of the birth of Prophet ﷺ and gives an opportunity to learn lessons from his life. According to them, spreading the teachings of Prophet ﷺ and remembering his mercy is itself a noble deed.

In a society like India these differences are often limited to mutual debates. Here a large number of Muslims see this festival as a religious and social identity. Many scholars are of the opinion that though views on this day may differ, the main purpose should be to remember the spirit of the Prophet ﷺ and his humane teachings.

So, Eid-e-Miladunnabi is not just a matter of disagreement but also an opportunity to reflect on how the teachings of the Prophet ﷺ can be applied in today’s world. Peace, brotherhood and justice – this is the true spirit of this festival.

He had said that the best person is the one who is most beneficial to others. This teaching is most important in today’s time.

Today’s world is facing the challenges of violence, intolerance and division. In such a situation, Milad-un-Nabi reminds us that the message of justice, love and peace is the only permanent solution. In a multi-religious and diverse country like India, the importance of this festival increases even more. Here Eid-e-Miladunnabi can become an opportunity to strengthen Hindu-Muslim unity and Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb. Only when people of different religions adopt the humane teachings of Prophet Muhammad (pbuh) together, can true brotherhood and peace prevail in society.

In the new digital era and social media, the message of this day has become even more widespread. Now this festival is not limited to only processions and gatherings, but is also connecting people from all over the world online. This is the reason why Eid-e-Miladunnabi gives the message of fulfilling the biggest need of peace and humanity in today’s time.

Eid-e-Miladunnabi 2025 is not just a religious festival but a message of humanity and brotherhood. The birth of Prophet Muhammad ﷺ gave the world the light that dispelled the darkness of ignorance and oppression and showed the path of justice, peace and love. Every aspect of his life is a lesson and guidance for mankind.

In today’s era, when society is facing challenges like violence, hatred and inequality, the teachings of Prophet ﷺ become even more relevant. Eid-e-Miladunnabi reminds us that the real celebration is not limited to lights, decorations and processions but lies in following the path shown by Prophet ﷺ – helping the poor, supporting the oppressed, establishing peace and giving priority to humanity.

In a pluralistic country like India, this festival is a symbol of Ganga-Jamuni Tehzeeb and social unity. This day brings the message of peace and love not only for the Muslim community but for the entire nation. This festival will fulfill its true meaning only when we take inspiration from the teachings of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and bring about a change in our lives.

Therefore, Eid-e-Miladunnabi should end with the prayer that may Allah show us the right path, fill our hearts with love and enlighten our lives with peace, brotherhood and blessings.
