ED Probe Extends to Salary Account

ED Probe has now zeroed in on the Assembly salary account of Trinamool Congress MLA Jiban Krishna Saha, who was arrested again by the Enforcement Directorate (ED) after months of close surveillance on his financial activities. Investigators believe this account may have been used for questionable transactions, adding a new layer to the ongoing corruption case against him.

Background of SSC Recruitment Scam Arrest

Saha was first arrested in April 2023 by the CBI in connection with the SSC recruitment corruption scandal, spending nearly 13 months in jail. During that time, his bank accounts were frozen, halting the deposit of his legislative salary and allowances. After securing bail from the Supreme Court in May 2024, Saha resumed his legislative duties, and his salary account was reactivated by the Assembly Secretariat. Since then, the account has seen multiple transactions, which the ED now plans to scrutinize.

Assembly Salary Account Under Spotlight

Officials from the West Bengal Assembly confirm that each elected legislator is assigned a designated salary account to receive monthly pay and allowances. For Saha, this account was first opened in 2021 after his election from Baranagar constituency. Following his first arrest, deposits into this account were suspended. However, upon release in 2024, Saha persistently appealed for the reopening of his account to access his pending dues. Once restored, his backlog of salary payments and committee allowances were credited.

Financial Benefits at Stake

Currently, legislators in West Bengal draw a salary and allowances totaling ₹1,21,000 per month. Saha, apart from his basic salary of about ₹61,000, also received allowances for his membership in the Higher Education Committee and the Subordinate Legislative Committee. After the account was reopened, all his arrears were paid. ED investigators suspect that these funds may have been routed into questionable transactions.

Next Steps in ED Probe

Though the Assembly Secretariat has not yet received a formal request from the ED regarding Saha’s salary account, officials expect the account to be frozen in the coming days. According to sources, this step is seen as inevitable as the ED deepens its investigation into financial flows linked to the alleged corruption.
