Depression brewing over Gangetic West Bengal has intensified weather concerns across the state. According to the Alipore Meteorological Department, a low-pressure system accompanied by a cyclonic circulation is expected to bring heavy to very heavy rainfall to several parts of South Bengal over the next few days. Gusty winds, reaching speeds of 30–40 km/h, are also likely to lash the region. Northern Bengal too will witness thunderstorms and scattered downpours throughout the week.
The depression currently lies over Gangetic West Bengal and adjacent areas. It is being fueled by an active cyclonic circulation that is projected to drift northwestwards toward Jharkhand and northern Chhattisgarh within the next 48 hours. The monsoon trough now stretches from Bathinda to the Bay of Bengal, passing through Rohtak, Kanpur, Daltonganj, and the core of the low-pressure zone. With the monsoon already active in the region, widespread rainfall is expected to persist across South Bengal, particularly Kolkata and its surrounding districts. Rainfall may range from 7 to 20 cm in various areas.
Heavy to very heavy rain is forecast from Tuesday evening through Wednesday morning in districts including North and South 24 Parganas, East Burdwan, Hooghly, Bankura, and West Midnapore. An orange alert has been issued for these regions. Other southern districts may also receive 7–11 cm of rainfall, accompanied by lightning and gusty winds. By Wednesday, districts like West Burdwan, Purulia, Jhargram, and Bankura are likely to experience intense showers, while scattered thunderstorms may affect other regions as well.
The impact of the depression will extend to coastal areas too. The sea is expected to remain rough off the West Bengal and Odisha coasts for the next 24 hours. Authorities have advised fishermen not to venture into deep-sea waters during this period.
Northern Bengal isn’t spared either. Districts such as Jalpaiguri and Kalimpong are likely to receive heavy rainfall on Tuesday, followed by more spells on Wednesday across Jalpaiguri, Kalimpong, and Alipurduar. Further rain is predicted in Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and adjoining areas through Sunday and Monday. Intermittent showers will continue across the region all week.
Since Monday night, Kolkata and its surrounding areas have been lashed by continuous rain. In the last 24 hours alone, Alipore recorded 81.6 mm, Dum Dum 99.3 mm, and Salt Lake 88.3 mm of rainfall. Several major roads across the city, including Lalbazar, BB Ganguly Street, Central Avenue, and the North Port police station area, are waterlogged. In some places, the water has reached knee level, causing serious traffic disruption and widespread inconvenience to residents.
