BJP adopts a restrained approach in Bengal politics, avoiding the “insider vs outsider” narrative that once helped Mamata Banerjee dominate the state’s electoral battlefield.

BJP Strategy in West Bengal appears to be shifting toward restraint rather than confrontation, leaving the ruling Trinamool Congress struggling to draw the party into the cultural and identity debates that once energized its support base.

Recently, West Bengal BJP chief Samik Bhattacharya found himself addressing a rather unusual issue for a saffron party leader in the state. He publicly clarified that the BJP had no intention of banning fish or meat in Bengal, responding to speculation triggered by a directive from the Bihar government. That order, which limited non-vegetarian shops near schools and religious places, had no direct link to Bengal. Yet the Trinamool Congress quickly pulled the matter into the state’s political discourse.

In fact, this evolving BJP Strategy has frustrated the Trinamool Congress narrative. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee warned that such policies could threaten Bengali food traditions, while the TMC’s social media campaign highlighted the cultural phrase “Maachhe Bhaate Bangali”—a Bengali defined by fish and rice—portraying it as a symbol of resistance against the BJP.

However, the sharp rhetoric may signal political unease rather than confidence. For the first time in several election cycles, the BJP is choosing not to respond aggressively to these provocations. Earlier confrontations that framed politics as “insiders versus outsiders” helped Mamata Banerjee secure a sweeping victory in the 2021 Assembly election, where the TMC won 213 seats with nearly 48 percent of the vote, compared with the BJP’s 77 seats and about 38 percent.

Another recent controversy also illustrates this cautious approach. When non-vegetarian items were removed from the menu of the Howrah–Kamakhya Vande Bharat Sleeper Express, the issue sparked protests and accusations from the TMC. Instead of escalating the dispute, the BJP-led Union government quietly revised the menu. While some BJP supporters criticized the move as overly conciliatory, it effectively avoided the political confrontation the TMC seemed eager to ignite.

For now, the BJP appears determined to operate on the edges of Bengal’s identity politics rather than at its center—an approach that may reshape the tone of the state’s next electoral battle.
