Shams Iqbal Arrest Puts Former TMC Councillor Back in Spotlight
Shams Iqbal Arrest has once again drawn widespread public attention after the former Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) councillor was taken into custody on allegations of extortion and criminal intimidation before securing bail within six hours. The case has revived debate over his controversial political career, his lavish lifestyle, and earlier allegations related to illegal construction activities in Kolkata’s Garden Reach area.
Police arrested the former Ward No. 134 councillor following a complaint filed by local businessman Mohammad Shadab, who alleged that he was forced to pay nearly ₹70 lakh over an extended period to continue operating his business without interference. According to investigators, the accused and several associates allegedly threatened the businessman and his family with serious consequences if the payments were not made.
Businessman Alleges ₹70 Lakh Extortion
Investigators said the complaint alleges that Shams Iqbal Arrest followed months of alleged extortion that began in June 2023. The complainant claimed that he was repeatedly instructed to pay money in exchange for running his business peacefully in Garden Reach. He further alleged that when he resisted, he was threatened with violence and that firearms were allegedly used to intimidate him.
The FIR reportedly names several other individuals, including Mohammad Faraz and Feroz Qureshi, as co-accused. Based on the complaint, Garden Reach Police registered cases under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita dealing with extortion and criminal intimidation, along with offences under the Arms Act.
Bail Granted Within Hours
Although police produced the former councillor before a Kolkata court, he was granted bail the same day after furnishing a bond of ₹1,000. The rapid bail order has generated political discussion, with critics questioning whether influential political figures continue to enjoy special treatment despite serious allegations.
Police officials have stated that the investigation remains ongoing and further evidence is being examined.
Close Association With Firhad Hakim

Shams Iqbal was widely regarded as a close political associate of former Kolkata Mayor Firhad Hakim. The two were frequently seen together at political programmes, public events and community functions. Social media posts over the years also showed Iqbal referring to Hakim as “Bobby Uncle,” reflecting their reportedly close personal relationship.
Luxury Lifestyle Frequently Made Headlines

Iqbal attracted public attention not only for his political activities but also for his extravagant lifestyle. One of the most talked-about incidents occurred when he arrived at the Kolkata Municipal Corporation headquarters in a luxury Aston Martin sports car reportedly worth several crores of rupees. The vehicle reportedly drew large crowds of municipal employees and visitors eager to catch a glimpse of the high-end automobile.
Political opponents had repeatedly questioned how a municipal councillor could afford such an expensive lifestyle.
Garden Reach Building Collapse Renewed Scrutiny

Iqbal’s name also surfaced after the tragic collapse of an illegally constructed multi-storey building in Garden Reach in 2024 that claimed 13 lives. The building fell within his municipal ward, and allegations emerged that illegal construction had flourished in the area during his tenure.
Photographs circulating on social media allegedly showed Iqbal with the building’s promoter, Wasim. Critics also accused influential political figures of shielding him during the controversy, although those allegations have not been judicially established.
More recently, his name has also appeared in complaints linked to the collapse of an under-construction warehouse in Taratala.
Opposition Previously Demanded His Arrest
Following the Garden Reach tragedy, senior BJP leader Suvendu Adhikari had publicly demanded Iqbal’s arrest, accusing him of enabling illegal construction and questioning the source of his considerable wealth.
Adhikari had also claimed that Iqbal owned ultra-luxury vehicles, including a Bentley reportedly valued at over ₹5 crore, asking how an elected municipal representative could accumulate such assets. Later, however, a video circulated on social media allegedly showing Iqbal greeting Adhikari by touching his feet after the state’s political realignment, although the authenticity of the video has never been independently verified.
Election Affidavit Raised Further Questions
Documents submitted during the 2021 Kolkata Municipal Corporation election declared movable assets worth approximately ₹5.68 lakh in Iqbal’s name. His wife disclosed movable assets of around ₹75 lakh, including a Mercedes-Benz purchased in 2017 for nearly ₹47 lakh.
The declarations became the subject of political debate because they appeared inconsistent with the luxurious lifestyle that Iqbal openly displayed in public.
Family’s Political Legacy and Earlier Allegations
Iqbal’s father, Munna Iqbal, was also a well-known political figure in Garden Reach and had previously served as a councillor. Over the years, the family has faced various allegations relating to land disputes and criminal cases, including complaints of forced property transfers. Those matters have remained part of separate legal proceedings.
Police officials say the investigation into the extortion allegations is continuing. Investigators are examining financial records, witness statements and other evidence while determining the role of the accused and the other individuals named in the FIR.
The arrest comes amid a series of investigations involving former municipal representatives in West Bengal as more complainants have come forward alleging extortion, intimidation and misuse of political influence.
