ANJUMAN MUFIDUL ISLAM: Save Committee Levels Serious Corruption Allegations

Anjuman Mufidul Islam faces serious allegations by the Save Committee, including claims of financial irregularities, audit lapses, property deal concerns and misuse of funds.

Anjuman
Anjuman Mufidul Islam has once again come under public scrutiny after the “Save Anjuman Mufidul Islam Committee” released a detailed document alleging large-scale financial irregularities, governance failures and lack of transparency within the institution. Addressing a press conference at the Press Club Kolkata, Joint Convenor Hussain Rizvi said the committee had compiled a series of allegations based on audit reports, institutional records and decisions taken by the present management.
The committee alleged that financial irregularities have persisted for several years and questioned the handling of fixed deposits, institutional funds, construction projects and property transactions. According to the committee, audit reports from multiple financial years did not contain auditor observation reports, preventing members from obtaining a complete picture of the institution’s financial position. The committee further claimed that the audit report for the financial year 2024-25 has not yet been presented before the Annual General Meeting.

Questions Raised Over Fixed Deposits and Financial Transactions of Anjuman Mufidul Islam

One of the principal allegations concerns the depletion of institutional deposits. The committee claimed that while Anjuman reportedly held deposits exceeding ₹92 lakh in March 2017, those funds were subsequently withdrawn and utilized under circumstances that require closer scrutiny. Committee representatives alleged that resolutions and agenda items relating to these transactions contained contradictions and raised questions regarding compliance with established financial procedures.
The committee also raised allegations regarding payments made to Ali Enterprises. Referring to observations contained in audit records, it claimed that substantial amounts were paid without proper documentation and questioned the manner in which contracts were awarded. The committee further alleged that the firm’s ownership and relationship with individuals associated with the institution require independent investigation. It demanded a forensic audit to determine whether all financial and statutory procedures were followed.

Construction Projects Under Scanner

Anjuman

A major portion of the allegations relates to various construction projects undertaken by the institution. The committee questioned expenditure incurred on the Anjuman School building, alleging insufficient disclosure regarding sources of funds, donor contributions and project expenditure. It also alleged that names of earlier donors associated with the institution were removed during redevelopment and replaced without proper authority.
Further concerns were raised regarding construction work at Hati Bagan Road, property development initiatives and a proposed educational project at Topsia. According to the committee, delays, cost escalations and the use of institutional funds require detailed independent examination. The committee claimed that complete financial accounts relating to these projects have not been made publicly available.

Joint Venture and Property Deal Allegations

The committee also questioned a joint venture agreement concerning land at North Range, Kolkata. It alleged that valuable waqf-linked property was transferred into a joint venture arrangement at a price significantly below its perceived market value. Committee representatives demanded full disclosure of the transaction and called for a review of the agreement by independent authorities.
In addition, allegations were made regarding the leasing of institutional property and the management of other assets belonging to Anjuman Mufidul Islam. The committee argued that decisions involving community-owned properties should be transparent and subject to greater oversight.

Questions Over Educational Projects

The Save Committee also questioned the handling of a proposed Urdu-medium school project at Topsia Road. According to the committee, despite a long-standing need for educational infrastructure in the area, the project failed to progress while resources were allegedly diverted to other initiatives. The committee further questioned expenditure incurred on related construction activities and sought a full accounting of funds utilized.

Allegations of Lack of Transparency

The Save Committee further alleged that collections made for humanitarian causes, including Rohingya relief, lockdown assistance programmes and a proposed law college project, were not accompanied by sufficiently detailed public accounting. It also claimed that annual audit reports were not submitted within prescribed timelines in several financial years.

Questions Raised During Press Conference

During the interaction session, questions were put to the convenors regarding their future course of action. Participants asked whether the committee would withdraw its allegations if the current management resigned, how allegedly siphoned-off funds would be recovered, and whether any legal proceedings would be initiated if the management refused to step down.
Those present observed that detailed answers regarding legal strategy, timelines and recovery mechanisms were not provided during the session, leading some attendees to call for a clearer roadmap of action.

Save Committee’s Demands

Alongside the allegations, the Save Committee placed a set of specific demands before the existing management of Anjuman Mufidul Islam, stating that these measures are necessary to restore transparency, accountability and public confidence in the institution.
The committee demanded the immediate resignation of the President and Secretary, whom it accused of presiding over financial irregularities and administrative failures. It further called upon all executive committee members to step down, alleging that they had failed to exercise effective oversight over the institution’s affairs.
The Save Committee also demanded that the administration of Anjuman Mufidul Islam be entrusted to competent, credible and trustworthy individuals capable of safeguarding the institution’s legacy and ensuring proper governance. According to the committee, a complete restructuring of the management system is essential for restoring confidence among members, donors and the wider community.
Another key demand relates to financial accountability. The committee called for the appointment of a capable external auditor as well as an internal auditor to examine the institution’s accounts, investigate alleged irregularities and recommend reforms to strengthen financial controls. It argued that an independent audit process is necessary to establish the true financial position of the institution and determine whether any wrongdoing has occurred.
The Save Committee further demanded that complete income and expenditure statements be provided not only to general members and life members but also to donors who have contributed to the institution over the years. In addition, it called for all financial statements, audit reports and expenditure details to be uploaded on the institution’s official website so that they can be accessed by the public and subjected to scrutiny.
The current management of Anjuman Mufidul Islam has previously denied allegations of wrongdoing and defended its administration. The allegations made by the “Save Anjuman Mufidul Islam Committee” have not been independently verified by Qalam Times, and the management’s response to the latest allegations was not immediately available.
