Electrocution Tragedy in Kolkata
Electrocution has claimed multiple lives across Kolkata following relentless overnight rainfall, leaving the city in shock. Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee directly blamed the Calcutta Electric Supply Corporation (CESC) for these deaths, accusing the private distributor of negligence and poor infrastructure maintenance.
CM’s Sharp Criticism of CESC
Addressing the crisis on Tuesday, Mamata Banerjee lashed out at CESC, alleging that while the company continues business in Kolkata, it prioritizes modernization projects in Rajasthan. “Here, modernization is neglected. I’ve said this countless times—my throat aches from repeating it,” she remarked. She demanded that CESC immediately deploy emergency staff across affected areas and shoulder responsibility for the fatalities.
Support for Victims’ Families
The Chief Minister assured bereaved families of her full support. She further insisted that CESC provide jobs to at least one member of each victim’s household. “This is non-negotiable,” Mamata stressed, emphasizing the moral duty of the power company.
City in Crisis After Heavy Rainfall
Continuous rain since Monday night submerged several key areas of Kolkata, with waterlogging reported from neighborhoods that had never previously faced such flooding. At least five deaths have been officially confirmed so far, three of which were due to electrocution, while others remain under investigation. Unconfirmed reports suggest more casualties, fueling widespread fear among residents as live wires and exposed cables lay scattered in waterlogged streets.
Emergency Response Underway
Mamata said she has been in constant touch with Kolkata’s Mayor Firhad Hakim, Chief Secretary Manoj Pant, and police authorities to monitor the disaster response. Despite efforts, the Kolkata Municipal Corporation has been unable to drain the floodwater due to saturated conditions. “Where will the water go? Everything is submerged,” she admitted, warning that high tides in the Hooghly River may worsen flooding.
Caution Ahead of Festive Season
With Durga Puja approaching, Mamata voiced concern over the impact of the disaster on celebrations. “Clubs and committees will face difficulties, but nothing can be done. We must get through today and tomorrow first,” she said. She also criticized the central government for withholding GST dues, claiming this has drained state finances needed for disaster management.
Fatalities Across Neighborhoods
Electrocution-related deaths were reported from Ekbalpur’s Hossain Shah Road, Netajinagar, Beniapukur, Behala, and Haridevpur. Additional bodies were recovered from Gariahat and Garfa, including that of a cyclist. Meanwhile, private sources suggest further unconfirmed cases of electrocution in other parts of the city.
