Dalit Family Converts to Islam in Nuh, Hindu Groups Protest and Police Case Registered

A Dalit family from Marora village in Nuh, Haryana, has converted to Islam Willingly, raised social and political tensions in the area. Five members of the family – Chetram (45), his wife Rekha (39) and their three children Shivam (21), Sonam and Arun (8) – have changed their names to Islam. Chetram is now Mohammad Iqram, his wife Rukhsar and the children have also taken new names.

Affidavit and family statement

The family clarified on social media and in court that their conversion was voluntary, without any kind of pressure or inducement. Chetram wrote in an affidavit dated April 3, 2025, “Impressed by the goodness of Islam, I have accepted Islam voluntarily along with my wife and children. We have no connection with our old religion. No one is forcing us.”

Police case and investigation

The family’s brother Satbir lodged a complaint at Nagina police station, in which he alleged that the family was kept hidden in the house of Shaheed Aterna and Sirajuddin and they were forced or lured to convert. Based on the complaint, the police registered a case against both of them.

However, during police interrogation, Chetram and his family reiterated their position and said that they had converted without coming under anyone’s influence. Even after the family’s affidavit and statement in the court were made public, tension remains over their safety.

Local reaction and panchayat

After the news of conversion, a panchayat of people of Hindu society was organized at Kabir Nath temple in Nuh on Wednesday. It was attended by dignitaries of the district. Speakers in the panchayat said that from time to time Hindu minorities have been converted in the district, and the majority Muslim society is watching it.

Several aspects of love jihad, forced conversion and harassment of Hindu community were discussed in the meeting. The panchayat decided to give a memorandum to the state government and call a district-level mahapanchayat if necessary.

Social scenario of the area

About 6,000 people live in Marora village, of which the majority is Muslim community and there are only 15 Scheduled Caste Hindu families. The conversion of Chetram’s family has now become the center of political and social controversy in the small community and the district.

Nageena police station in-charge Praveen Kumar said that the statements of all the family members have been recorded in the court. He clarified that in the statement the family reiterated that the conversion happened Willingly.
