IMD alert and weather conditions
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Monday issued an orange alert in Delhi, Noida and Gurugram. The department has predicted strong winds and moderate to heavy rains with thunderstorms.
According to the newscast on the IMD website, this orange alert is valid in all districts till 5:45 pm. Earlier in the morning, there was a yellow alert in Delhi, Noida and Gurugram. At the same time, a yellow alert was issued in Ghaziabad. the Yamuna river in Delhi is flowing above the danger mark at Lohe Pul.
August and September weather in NCR
Delhi-NCR witnessed relatively cool temperatures in August due to continuous spells of rain and cold winds. August recorded a record rainfall of 400.1 mm, which is 72% more than the average of 233.1 mm for the month. According to a report by HT, this could be the city’s coldest August in the last 13 years.
According to IMD, the same trend of rain is likely to continue in September as well. Last year, September recorded 200 mm of rain while the month normally receives 123.5 mm of rain. The additional rain this year could take Delhi’s annual rainfall total to over 1,000 mm.
Red and Orange Alert in North India
The IMD has issued a heavy rain warning for several districts of North India till September 5.
Red Alert Districts in Punjab:
Pathankot, Gurdaspur, Hoshiarpur, Kapurthala, Jalandhar, Nawanshahr, Rupnagar, Ludhiana, Fatehgarh Sahib, Sas Nagar, Patiala
Red Alert Districts in Uttarakhand:
Uttarkashi, Dehradun, Haridwar, Tehri Garhwal, Pauri Garhwal, Udham Singh Nagar, Champawat, Nainital, Bageshwar
Red Alert Districts in Himachal Pradesh:
Kangra, Una, Bilaspur, Solan, Shimla, Sirmaur
Very heavy rains, strong winds and thunderstorms are expected in these districts. Apart from this, Orange Alert has been issued in many districts.
MD’s forecast and precautions
IMD has urged citizens to be cautious. Road and waterlogging problems may increase during rain in NCR. People living near Yamuna and other rivers have been advised to be cautious.
The Meteorological Department said that in view of strong winds and lightning incidents, take safety measures while going out.
Rain continues in Delhi-NCR with orange and yellow alerts. City dwellers should keep an eye on the water level of Yamuna and strong winds. With red alerts issued in many districts of North India, it is clear that it is necessary to take the warning of the Meteorological Department seriously.
