Flash Floods Ravage Doda After Cloudburst

Flash Floods

The Flash Floods in Jammu have once again exposed the region’s vulnerability to extreme weather, with four lives lost in Doda district on Tuesday. A sudden cloudburst triggered torrents of water, sweeping through villages and damaging at least ten houses, according to district officials. The tragedy has added to a grim toll in Jammu and Kashmir, where flash floods and cloudbursts have killed dozens in recent weeks.

Warning Proves True

The Flash Floods in Jammu came despite advance warnings. The meteorological department had already issued alerts for heavy to very heavy rainfall across Kathua, Doda, Samba, Jammu, Ramban, and Kishtwar districts. The fears proved accurate as torrential downpours hit Doda, unleashing destructive flash floods that submerged large areas and destroyed property. In response, the administration has ordered the closure of all schools and colleges across the Jammu region.

Rivers Swell Beyond Danger Mark

Adding to the crisis, the Tawi River is in spate, with several rivers and tributaries flowing well above the danger mark. Officials warned that water levels are expected to rise further overnight, increasing the risk of widespread inundation. “A flood alert has been issued in Jammu region. People are advised to stay away from riverbanks and landslide-prone areas,” said a senior official.

A Region Under Siege by Nature

Flash Floods

This latest calamity follows closely on the heels of earlier cloudbursts and flash floods in Kishtwar and Kathua that left dozens dead and many missing. Entire villages have been left grieving, while survivors now face the threat of further rainfall and unstable terrain. The repeated disasters underscore the fragile ecology of Jammu and Kashmir and the urgent need for effective disaster preparedness and resilient infrastructure.
