Synopsis: Intruder incident at Kolkata University women’s hostel raises major security concerns. Students protest negligence, demand safety measures and accountability.

Intruder An intruder allegedly broke into a women’s hostel room of Kolkata University late Saturday night, raising serious security concerns. According to the student, the unidentified youth rummaged through her belongings, stole her mobile phone, and shoved her when she attempted to catch him. The incident has sparked protests by the student wing of the Trinamool Congress, demanding immediate action and better hostel safety.

What Happened Inside the Hostel Room? Sayantani Chakraborty, a third-year student of Rajabazar Science College, stated that she was asleep in her room at Mahatma Gandhi Road hostel when she woke up to a noise. She saw an intruder going through her bag and scattering items across the floor. When she tried to stop him, he pushed her aside and escaped by climbing down a pipe from the balcony. Soon after, she discovered her mobile phone was missing.

Hostel Authorities’ Response The student reported the matter to hostel superintendent Chandreyi Murmu, who allegedly told her that since the accused had already fled, nothing could be done until the next day. Murmu later claimed she had advised students not to leave doors or windows open at night and explained that the delay occurred because she did not have the police contact number at hand. Police eventually reached the hostel on Sunday afternoon, but no official complaint had been lodged at the time of reporting.

Students Protest Lack of Security Members of the Trinamool Chhatra Parishad staged a demonstration outside the hostel, accusing the administration of negligence. They insisted that the intruder incident exposed serious lapses in security and demanded stricter surveillance measures, including more CCTV cameras and better coordination with local police. Students also criticized the security guard, who questioned why the balcony door had been left open instead of addressing the larger safety breach.

Ongoing Concerns The incident has intensified the debate over women’s safety in hostels across Kolkata. With repeated demands for accountability, students are pressing the university to act swiftly and ensure that no such intruder episodes endanger residents in the future.
