The RG Kar Protest flared once again on Friday night, as junior doctors returned to the streets demanding justice for the victim of the RG Kar Medical College tragedy. At 9 p.m., a torch-lit march set out from College Street, making its way to Shyambazar, drawing supporters and onlookers along the route.
The RG Kar Protest was not confined to Kolkata. In Malda, junior doctors at Malda Medical College staged a unique demonstration, covering hospital walls with protest graffiti. The visual message was clear—justice delayed is justice denied. In Medinipur, a coalition of left-wing organisations rallied together in a joint march demanding accountability.
Political and student groups also joined in. The Students’ Federation of India (SFI) and the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI) organised an evening march from College Street to Shyambazar, amplifying the demand for immediate judicial action.
Friday’s protests marked the eve of the first anniversary of the shocking rape and murder of a female doctor at RG Kar Medical College—a case that has shaken West Bengal. On Saturday, August 9, rallies, demonstrations, and public meetings are planned across Kolkata. The victim’s parents have called for a march to Nabanna, receiving direct support from Leader of the Opposition Suvendu Adhikari and the state BJP leadership. A section of the medical community has also announced a separate march towards Kalighat, signalling a weekend of heightened public mobilisation.
